Phillies vs. Rays – 3/12

port charlotte.jpgThree weeks from today the Phillies fly home to Philadelphia.

This is a good thing.

But in the meantime they continue to play Grapefruit League games. Here is the lineup for today’s game against the Rays in Port Charlotte. Jayson Werth was supposed to start in center field and hit second, but he was a late scratch. We just learned that Werth has a “tweak” in his groin. We have been told Werth should be available to play tomorrow. Jason Ellison has taken Werth’s place:

1. Miguel Cairo, 2B
2. Jason Ellison, CF
3. Raul Ibanez, LF
4. Ryan Howard, 1B
5. Geoff Jenkins, DH
6. Greg Dobbs, 3B
7. John Mayberry Jr., RF
8. Jason Donald, SS
9. Ronny Paulino, C

Scheduled to pitch: Jamie Moyer and J.A. Happ

Is ‘The Bat’ playing for Tampa?
Happ can take a giant step today. I’m pulling for him.

Hope Moyer & Happ have good outings. Counting the days until season opener!

Is it just me, or do the words “tweak” and “groin” in the same sentence make you cringe? “scratch” isn’t too inviting either.
I just hope shenanigans aren’t a-happenin’ around Werth.
He’s waited his entire career to get a full time spot in the lineup. I’d hate to think what would happen if it was derailed by injuries AGAIN.

Todd:

Do you know how many appearances Jamie Moyer has had to date? Does he have a shot at making the Wall of Fame at some point with the Phillies? Thanks for checking it out.

Werth keeps “tweaking” things he will assure Jenkins a spot on the team. Stairs can’t be an everyday right fielder anymore, Mayberry might be too much of an adventure and Dobbs isn’t the answer long term. Get well soon Jason.

Jimmy: I think that Jenkins has a spot on the team in any case as #4 OF. The question is whether we keep 4 or 5 OF (stairs or Mayberry or neither) or an extra infielder (giles, Cairo or Donald) As I’ve been saying all spring, our bench is going to be: Dobbs, Coste, Brunlett, Jenkins +? the math is 8 starters + 12 pitchers + 5 bench

Jeff , I don’t disagree but if Werth is dinged a lot, there is no trade possibility of Jenkins for a RH bat off of bench, assuming you keep Stairs for the LH pinch hitter role. Stairs has no trade value, not sure if Jenkins does either. Peresonally, I think/thought Jenkins was a better player than he showed last year but the jury is still out on that.

Sorry I fat fingered “personally”

Anyone want to bet Werth will be on the DL on opening day.

Why does Happ keep coming out of the pen?? Because the Phils want/need him in the pen more than they need Park in there. They want him to get used to it. Kendrick is done, and so is Carrasco. Unless Park absolutley falls apart, he ‘wins’ the 5th spot. I’d like to see Donald and or possibly Mayberry make the team, but as we all know, thats not Phils style. They dont like to let young guys get MLB experience(full season of course) if they arent playing full time…oh well

There’s a nice thank-you note from Pat the Bat in today’s Inky sports section. Very classy and I hope he has a great year in Tampa.

Clinton, Happ “comes out of the pen” because that’s how pitchers appear in games during Spring Training. You’ll see several starting pitchers come in during the later innings (Blanton, Park, Carrasco so far this year)
As for Kendrick, he definitely risked his future by coming out of Reading before his pitching repertoire was fully developed.
I wouldn’t say that for Carrasco. He’s only a year removed from AA, and probably just needs a year in Allentown.
I think if Happ is in the bullpen and Park in the rotation, that leaves a void for long-man in the ‘pen. I see the Phils doing the opposite.
