Dubee: Hamels Likely A Long Shot for Opening Day

Phillies pitching coach Rich Dubee thinks Cole Hamels likely is a long shot to pitch Opening Day.

Hamels is going to long toss Thursday. If everything goes well, he could pitch in a Grapefruit League game early next week, which would put him several days behind schedule.

“I don’t know that it’s out of the question, but I think it would be a long shot,” Dubee said. “Opening Day is probably a long shot, just because we’ve got to get him up and running. We’ve got to stretch him out. I think he’s been up to 52 or 54 pitches. We like our guys, if they’re going to pitch, hopefully they’ll be ready to throw 100 pitches by Opening Day. It could be a long shot. Again, this guy has always risen to the occasion. It’s good that we caught it when we did. It wasn’t getting cleared up. It wasn’t getting any worse, but it wasn’t getting any better.”

Todd, thanks for the Cole update. How did Myers look today, his line looks real good. Also, what about the problem we seem to have with other teams running at will on us? Are they addresing this problem? Can you try to get Dubee’s thoughts on it? it sems every game we’re giving up at least 1 or 2 SBs and it doesn’t matter who’s pitching or catching

Here’s what Dubee said about Myers: “He threw very well. I thought he had good focus. I thought he mixed very, very well. He threw some good changeups. He threw his curveball some. He located his fastball pretty well for the most part. He threw to both sides of the plate well. I thought it was a very, very good outing for Brett.”

Are we assuming that Brett will be the #2 starter? If so, I’m fine with Cole missing his Opening Day start. As long as Brett pitches as well as he did today!

I’m sooo pisssed about Hamels missing opening day! He gives the Phils the bets chance to win that day, and now he wont be starting. Im sick of the Philks losing on opening day!! The crowd is always so lame too. They will be in it for about 2 innings, then they go silent, its a joke! They will be all pumped up at the begining, then its like they forget what they are there for. I know some of you guys know what I’m talking about……

You guys see Victorino laughing at Romero after his base hit to lead off the bottom of the 9th?? Good stuff!

Nice comeback by the US, but I can’t say that I’m pleased. It just means that we are missing the top of our lineup for at least another week.

I’ll buy the “company” line for now that if Cole isn’t ready for opening day so be it and we’d rather have him healthy for a majority of the season.

Wonder if Myers gets another crack at Opening Day??

Jimmy and Shane have been incredible during this WBC run. I think they are making a lot of their teammates jealous as they represent their country, teammates, and us Phans. These guys are ready to start the season today. Shane singled off J.C. (Why was he even pitching then?) and scored the 4th run. Jimmy walked and scored on David Wright’s (yes, that David Wright’s) game winning hit. This teaqm is going to score runs like two years ago!!!
