Hamels Hurt Again, This Time Turns Ankle

This is getting ridiculous, isn’t it?

Cole Hamels was pitching beautifully through 4 1/3 scoreless innings tonight against the Nationals at Citizens Bank Park when he tried to field a bunt coming off the pitcher’s mound with one out in the fifth inning. Hamels rolled his left ankle and fell to the turf. He threw one pitch to test the ankle, but left the game.

The Phillies said Hamels has a mild ankle sprain. X-rays were negative.

Hamels? He said it’s no big deal.

“I’m not planning on missing a start,” Hamels said. “Obviously we have to see how it feels in the next couple days, but I think it helps that we have an off day. So I’m on a six day recovery period instead of five.”

Hamels actually appeared to be in fine spirts after the Phillies’ 7-1 victory.

Disgusted, Cole?

“Disgusted? Hey, we won.”

Believe somebody has a Hamels voodoo doll?

“I’d probably be on the disabled list with a surgery procedure if somebody hated me that bad. Why would they toy around with me?”

We will know more the next couple days, obviously. But right now Hamels is optimistic he will be fine.

The Curse of John Lannan.

They should bring up the entire AAA team when John Lannan is pitching.

I just saw Hamels in an interview and it appears that he thinks he’ll be alright. He is just very frustrated.

I was thinking the same thing about Lannan! What is with that guy? I was at the game, and when Cole went down, there was a collective groan from 44,000 fans. Good thing Lannan didn’t get another AB. Manny Acta probably figured the fans would attack.

Forgot to mention the good stuff……..

Loved all the bombs! Except the one from the Nats, of course. I think Chase and Raul are having a friendly HR competition. Tied at 7 apiece.

And aside from the one HR he gave up, Durbin was outstanding! If any of our pitchers need to go on the DL, (cough*Hamels*cough,) Charlie should move either Durbin or Haap into a starter role, and call someone up from AAA for the ‘pen.

I think Hamels needs to have an exorcism or something to remove the “whammy” that seems to be over him at the moment. I hope its not too severe.

Nice win last night and also a fast game! It was a pleasant surprise not to have to play catch up for a change.

Continuing with E comments. He did win one game and his era is only 7.17 after his loss yesterday.

I’m really impressed by the way Cole and the team are handling what’s going on with him this season. Very positive. Very encouraging. I love his response: “Disgusted? Hey, we won.” That is such a humble, mature, selfless, team-centered response. He doesn’t care if HE gets the win or a relief pitcher gets the win! That’s CHARACTER. Never change!!
