Hamels Hurt Again, This Time Turns Ankle
This is getting ridiculous, isn’t it?
Cole Hamels was pitching beautifully through 4 1/3 scoreless innings tonight against the Nationals at Citizens Bank Park when he tried to field a bunt coming off the pitcher’s mound with one out in the fifth inning. Hamels rolled his left ankle and fell to the turf. He threw one pitch to test the ankle, but left the game.
The Phillies said Hamels has a mild ankle sprain. X-rays were negative.
Hamels? He said it’s no big deal.
“I’m not planning on missing a start,” Hamels said. “Obviously we have to see how it feels in the next couple days, but I think it helps that we have an off day. So I’m on a six day recovery period instead of five.”
Hamels actually appeared to be in fine spirts after the Phillies’ 7-1 victory.
“Disgusted? Hey, we won.”
Believe somebody has a Hamels voodoo doll?
“I’d probably be on the disabled list with a surgery procedure if somebody hated me that bad. Why would they toy around with me?”
We will know more the next couple days, obviously. But right now Hamels is optimistic he will be fine.
