Werth Is A Running Fool

werth steals third.jpgJayson Werth
had a heck of a night Tuesday.

He tied a franchise record with four stolen bases, becoming the first Phillie to accomplish the feat since Garry Maddox (May 29, 1978 against Pittsburgh). Werth is believed to be just the second player in Phillies history to steal second, third and home in the same inning. Pete Rose accomplished the feat May 11, 1980 against Cincinnati. Werth also is the first Phillies player to steal home since Carlos Ruiz on June 26, 2007.

Trent McCotter from the SABR Records Committee did some research on players who stole their way around the bases in an inning over the past 80 years. Here is the list that he found:

  • Werth, Phillies, 5/12/2009 (7th inn)
  • Eric Young, Colorado, 6/30/1996 (3rd inn)
  • Chris Stynes, Kansas City, 5/12/1996 (1st inn)
  • Devon White, California, 9/9/1989 (6th inn)
  • Paul Molitor, Milwaukee, 7/26/1987 (1st inn)
  • Dusty Baker, San Francisco, 6/27/1984 (3rd inn)
  • Rose, Phillies, 5/11/1980 (7th inn)
  • Dave Nelson, Texas, 8/30/1974 (1st inn)
  • Rod Carew, Minnesota, 5/18/1969 (3rd inn)
  • Don Kolloway, White Sox, 6/28/1941 (9th inn)
  • Jackie Tavener, Detroit, 7/25/1928 (7th inn)
  • Harvey Hendrick, St. Louis Browns, 6/12/1928 (8th inn)

Jimmy Rollins went 1 for 3 with a stolen base, walk, run scored and RBI after Charlie Manuel dropped him from the leadoff spot to the fifth spot. Asked if Manuel would keep the same lineup today against Dodgers lefthander Randy Wolf, Manuel said, “You don’t throw the winning ticket away, do you?”

Chan Ho Park has a 1.50 ERA in his last two starts. His 6.00 ERA is second-best in the Phillies rotation.

The Zo Zone is on Facebook and Twitter.

This may be too tough to research, but has anyone ever stolen their way around the bases the way WERTH did, in that every base was challenged by the defense? Werth was the front end of double steals, but the throw was always to HIS base!!! Also, I thought Jackie Robinson in’47 and Honus Wagner ’09 accomplished the feat.

Couldn’t believe how fast it happened! All of the sudden T-Mac is yelling Werth is stealing home!! So cool! Glad to see how patient our Fightins were at the plate last night…..how about Feliz getting 4 walks!!?

Re: Bengal- There was no throw to any base during the double steal of 3rd and 2nd.

And I would have loved to hear how Harry would have called the steal of home.

I would expect Jackie Robinson to be on the least. The clips of him stealing home, at least, are iconic.

Carlos Ruiz stole home? Had to be a double steal.

I’m old enough to remember CHICO Ruiz.

Yes it was a double steal. They showed it last night after Werth’s stolen base. I thought the same thing before they showed it because Chooch isn’t exactly a speed demon🙂

What a game by Werth. Obviously the 4 steals are teh headline, but the fact that he had a PO as well is impresive. I am really liking our OF this year. They hustle, they hit, they field and they are leaders on the team.

I was also impressed with Park. As someone who has said all along he should be in the Pen, I must admit that he is beginning to prove me wrong.

Todd, what are the odds of Happ starting the 2nd game of teh twin bill this weekend? Have the Phils mentioned anything yet?

I think Happ is the only option at this point, unless the Phillies have to use him to pitch a bunch of innings today or tomorrow.

FIJ: There was an item about that in today’s Inky. Dubee wants to wait until tomorrow (to make sure Happ isn’t needed for long inning relief) before he makes a decision.

I loved how patient everyone was at the plate last night. Think there was 8-9 walks (4 by Feliz alone!).

Hey Zo, sounds like you took a little heat from J-Roll yesterday!

Zo’s question was no big deal but JRoll got a case of the azzz and snapped a little. I think Jimmy needs to sit down with Crash Davis….
Crash Davis: It’s time to work on your interviews.
Ebby Calvin LaLoosh: My interviews? What do I gotta do?
Crash Davis: You’re gonna have to learn your clichés. You’re gonna have to study them, you’re gonna have to know them. They’re your friends. Write this down: “We gotta play it one day at a time.”
Ebby Calvin LaLoosh: Got to play… it’s pretty boring.
Crash Davis: ‘Course it’s boring, that’s the point. Write it down.

anyone notice we didn’t walk anyone last night? I really hope Happ gets the start. He deserves it and it will put a bit of friendly presure on the other guys to continue to shape up

and dare i say it….no HRs given up?!? think it makes perfect sense for Happ to get the start especially if he’s not needed tonight or tomorrow.

Anyone else a little concerned about Chase? Hitless in the last couple of games. He always seems to slump after a hot start. But I know…..He’ll be OK!

debindixie, thanks for the link to the article. Gonzo is always full of himself, and no one knows that more than Todd. The Inquirer is about to go the way of the dinosaur and writers like Gonzo ,or worse, Bill Conlin will not be missed. Todd did the right thing… for us all.

Sorry. I love Gonzo! It’s pretty much all tongue in cheek. And he agreed that Todd should have asked the question.

And besides…..He put me in his email column the other day. 🙂

Please, Todd…..If I’m wrong, let me know.
