Ibanez Sits Sixth in All-Star Voting

ibanez vs. atlanta.jpgRaul Ibanez
should have no problem making the National League All-Star team this July, if he continues to hit like he has this season.

But shouldn’t he be starting?

He leads NL outfielders in the following categories: runs (38), home runs (17), RBIs (43), slugging percentage (.726) and extra-base hits (29). He ranks second in hits (58). He ranks third in average (.345) and go-ahead RBIs (9). He ranks fifth in game-winning RBIs (5). He ranks sixth in doubles (11) and on-base percentage (.408).

But Ibanez finds himself sixth in voting for NL outfielders with 399,969 votes. He trails Milwaukee’s Ryan Braun (663,164), Chicago’s Alfonso Soriano (545,354), New York’s Carlos Beltran (476,843), Los Angeles’ Manny Ramirez (442,763) and Milwaukee’s Mike Cameron (432,034).

Braun and Beltran are having fine seasons, but Soriano and Cameron? Soriano is hitting .253 with 12 homers and 25 RBIs. Cameron is hitting .285 with nine homers and 22 RBIs.

Oh, yeah … Chase Utley leads NL second basemen and Jimmy Rollins and Ryan Howard rank third amongst shortstops and first basemen, respectively.

We all know it’s a popularity contest and Raul is new to the NL, especially having plyed his trade in the great northwest.
Anybody voting for Manny sould be embarrassed.

Great job by Blanton and Lidge tonight. Chollie should have had Lidge in there from the start in the ninth, but it was good to see him perform under pressure.

Just tried voting online for the all-star team, but it is temporarily unavailable??!? Hope the fact that the Phils are having a week long homestand helps voting also.

Blanton was terrific last night. Don’t know what happened with Durbin. Got the 1st out rather quickly than things fell apart. Nice to see Lidge get another save. I think he’s improving with each outing.

I can’t believe Manny has that many votes. That is upsetting that he could get to start in the game and not Raul. Raul has worked hard and deserves it!

Don’t worry! Even if Rauuul isn’t voted the starter by the stupid fans, Charlie is the manager. Assuming that the NL is the home team (It’s in St. Louis) all he does is pulls the “starter” after the first pitch and puts Ibanez in where he belongs. Maybe this will wake MLB up to their ridiculous voting ways and how they have ruined the All star game (not to mention the honor of being named to the starting team)

Look at the positional breakdowns again. Milwaukee is stuffing the ballots. I think we need to do the same. Go to the ballpark. Everyone vote 100+ times. Vote all Phillies. We can get at least 3 starters on that team.

I love the smell of ballot stuffing in the morning!!! (LOL!!) Just did my part for today for our Fightins :-)

People from Milwaukee ruin it for everyone.

You know the whole thing is garbage when Khalil Greene is fifth in shortstops. Cardinals, of course. That guy might be either in the minors or designated for assignment by the All-Star game.

Who are the crazy people voting for Manny?? He should not even qualify. I hate that this thing is nothing but a popularity contest….sickening. The deserving players, like Ibanez, get screwed every year.

Here’s my all star team for the NL (Based on this season). Obviously, however, I’ll be voting for all the Phillies on the ballet to stuff it as everyone else does. (I still think it ruins the game, but WTF)

1B Pujols (over Howard, Gonzalez and Johnson)

2B Hudson (over Utley, Sanchez and Philips)

3B Zimmerman (over Wright and Feliz ) (no real contest)

SS Ramirez
(over Tejada, Rollins and Guzman) Tight but **** with a .958 fielding percentage isn’t an all star in my book. That’s why I chose Ramirez over Tajada who is having the better year at the plate

OF Ibanez, Beltran and Braun
(over Dunn, Upton, Hawpe, C. Lee, Pierre and Victorino). The first two are obvious choices, the last spot was hard. Dunn’s poor fielding and low(ish) ave cost him as did Hawpes poor fielding. Pierre is doing great, and it’s hard leaving someone hitting .380+ off the team, but he hasn’t produced enough runs to warrant inclusion. A strong case could be made for C. Lee, but I feel Braun has been better this year.

C Martin
(over B. Molina, Y Molina, Baker and McCann) Very close. They are all about equal, but Martin is better defensively (despite Werth making him look foolish).

Okay, I’m ready for all the arguments and other opinions.

funny I wrote but a (ss) with a .958… and it censored it out. I love MLB.com (not)

Charlie (and Joe Torre) will make it a point that Manny gets a nod. He may not start, but he’ll be there.

Todd – FYI – The link to the video recap for last night’s game is not right. The link is for Monday night’s game. I know it’s not your job but I thought you may want to pass that along. Thanks:)

Only way manny should be there is in the stands as a paying fan. No one who was suspended for Doping (including Romero) should EVER be allowed to play in an All Star game even after suspension is over

Don’t forget paper ballots! I pick up a handful, then bring them back to my next game.

Sorry jefzahav, but Utley is my second baseman. Their numbers are comparable, outside of BA, and Hudson didn’t have to deal with and play through a tough injury (foot). If Utley doesn’t have that little bad stretch after being hit by a pitch, he blows Hudson away in every respect.

Miguel Tajada was also guilty of taking steroids and lying about his age. What kind of message do you want to send to our children, Mr. Selig? Whatever you can get away with is cool. If you get caught, don’t admit anything, take your punishment, and go play in the All Star Game.

Manny shouldn’t even be on the ballot, if he’s serving a 50 game suspension!

Well I voted 5 times yesterday. I have to say I am impressed with the online voting site. I love how you can pull up a window to compare the stats for each position and then how that list is sortable. I missed this the 1st time I voted but did it the next time and because of it I totally changed my AL votes. For the NL I went straight down the line Phillies except for SS (Jimmy doesn’t deserve it, we all know that) which was H. Ramirez of the Fish, and catcher which is McCann of the Braves.

I like what you guys are usually up too. This kind of clever work
and exposure! Keep up the terrific works guys I’ve included you guys to blogroll.
