Donald to Have Surgery, Marson on the DL

The Phillies temporarily have lost top prospects Jason Donald and Lou Marson to injuries.

Donald, who has been mentioned in recent trade rumors with the Red Sox for right-hander Brad Penny, is scheduled to have surgery Monday for a torn meniscus in his left knee. He is expected to miss three to four weeks.

Lehigh Valley also placed Marson on the 15-day disabled list with a bruised right foot.

Donald had been hitting .230 with one home run and 16 RBIs in 204 at-bats. He had struck out 52 times and walked just eight. Marson had been hitting .232 with one homer and eight RBIs in 112 at-bats.

This shows how fast a couple of guys can go from healthy future stars to on the DL and appearing less appealing to suitors for trades.

The Phillies have been very lucky that they haven’t really had too many injuries as other clubs have had already this year. Teams like the Mets have been plagued with injuries so far… Knock on wood, I hope all the Phillies starters and bench guys stay healthy this season!

Rich, it works both ways. A few of the big fish that people want the Phils to aquire in trades have just gone down with injuries as well (Peavy, Halliday and Bedard). You have to be careful that you don’t trade the farm for the next Freddy Garcia.

These guys do not appear to be setting AAA on fire. It may be the window of opportunity for getting some value for them is rapidly closing not that I was ever for trading them in the first place.

Marson and Donald actually played better in Spring Training. Unless Donald can play 3rd base, he’ll be wasted on the bench for most games, unless of course the Phils plan to replace J-Roll with him in three years. Otherwise, he’s just trade bait. Marson is struggling in Triple-A while Jaramillo is having a decent rookie year with Pittsburgh and Paulino is doing a respectable job for the Fish. God, I hope Reuben doesn’t look back at the Jaramillo trade and regret it later.
