Romero Involved in Incident with Rays Fan

romero mug.jpgA man tells The St. Petersburg Times that J.C. Romero assaulted him Thursday night after he made a comment to him about steroids.

Robert Eaton told the Times that Romero grabbed him by the neck and pushed him following Thursday night’s game between the Phillies and Rays at Tropicana Field.

“We are disappointed to learn about the alleged incident with a Rays fan and one of our players following Thursday night’s game at Tropicana Field,” the Phillies said today in a statement. “We are in the process of gathering all of the details surrounding the situation. Until such information is provided, it would be inappropriate for us to comment at this time.”

Eaton told the newspaper that he was attempting to get autographs from Phillies players. Once a few Phillies players declined, Eaton said he said something like, “How about you get me some juice?” to Romero.

Romero just finished serving a 50-game suspension for violating the league’s policy against performance enhancing substances.

Eaton said Romero told him to “shut the f— up” and that he didn’t know what he was talking about

“He reared back and kinda grazed my chin and grabbed me by the neck and threw me back,” Eaton told the Times. “I was in shock.”

Eaton has hired a lawyer.

“I don’t feel what I said was wrong,” Eaton said. “I feel if you cheat the game you’re going to hear it from people. He brought that on himself. I just can’t believe that a professional athlete would cross the line.”

Do you think Romero will be suspended by MLB for this incident??

Oh, boy. More details, please.

Never mind. You updated, as I posted.

The guy thinks now he needs to get money from Romero? What a woossie.

Interesting…first this idiot tells the newspaper then he decides he’s going to hire a lawyer. Why has he not gone to the police and file charges against J.C.? hhhhmmmmmm?

F that guy. He’s lucky JC didn’t punch him in the face. Also, what is with guys named Eaton being useless pieces of crap?

This guy is looking for an out of court payday. JC should have grabbed his throat a little harder but then there would probably be evidence.
Happ pitched an absolute masterpiece today and thank God this team woke up Jeckyl and got him some runs. If anyone ever talks about packaging him in a trade, I will………

Have to await further details, but sounds like he’s looking for a few $$s. Also goes to show how frustrated some of our players seem to be….Hamels & Utley yelling at the ump now JC telling an obnoxious fan to shut the f—up.

Sorry to have missed today’s gem of game. Might have to catch a replay of it. Great to see Happ have his 1st shut out.

Don’t you think the fan sort of crossed the line also? He must be expecting big bucks.

Romero may have to get a thicker skin to him. These kinds of comments will follow him forever now that he’s been suspended for banned substances.

The fact is you can’t go assaulting people, and though I am in Romero’s corner as a fan, I don’t condone this type of behavior.

Romero is walking a fine line, you can go from millionaire ballplayer to a guy unemployed really quick. He’s going to have to deal with this better in the future or he’ll be trading in his uniform for some jail garb if he can’t deal with it.

An eyewitness posted a different version on the Phillies site under the story about this incident. This witnesses story is different than Eaton’s. According to the witness, Romero pushed this guy away when he got in Romero’s face. There was no grabbing of the guys throat. Let us reserve judgement until the facts are known.

For all who did not get to read what the witness to this incident said here it is:

“I am a Ray’s fan, and I was there after the game. The fan got in his face and was being very loud and rude to Romero that was uncalled for. Romero just pushed him away from his face. He didn’t grab him by the throat, the fan is trying to hurt Romero and maybe get some money out of him. Romero was nice to us after the game and signed a ball for my grandson before all that happened.”

I wonder if this guy was imbibing adult beverages during the game?

Why did the Phillies say they were “disappointed”? Why didn’t they just say that we’ve heard about an incident and we’re gathering details? It’s like they’re already incriminating him.

I am sick to my stomach hearing about this. Please let us know if you get more details…I wonder how much this has gotten blown out of proportion?

I’m with you, Jenn! Can we talk about the Phils *W* today!

Glad to see Jamie settle down, after giving up 3 long balls. Glad to see Chase’s first triple of the season, result in the go-ahead runs. Glad to see the ‘pen hold it together. Even though they made it interesting a couple of times. And really glad to see Lidge get the save! Even though he made it even more interesting! But that’s Lidge this year. I’ll take it!

What a whiney little girl Eaton is — I wish Romero had beaten the crap out of him. I contacted the law firm representing Eaton and told them exactly what I thought of the little baby:

From another Rays fan: Mr. Romero is the one who did steroids so he should be able to take the comments. Many fans feel cheated when a cheater plays against them and wins (rightfully so). The Phillies are too good for him. They should just cut him. The Phillies have enough great talent and do not need to get mired in Romero’s distractions and shameful choices.
