Howard Goes Yard In Backyard

howard derby 1.jpgRyan Howard hit seven home runs in the first round of the Home Run Derby (the cool kids call them bombs) to advance to the semifinals. He hit eight more in the second round to finish with 15.

The two players with the most homers after two rounds advances to the finals, so Howard needs help.

Nelly and Chuck Berry are playing at the All-Star Gala after the Derby. When I think of Nelly I think of Dan Plesac, who used to dance to Nelly during batting practice in 2003. When I think of Berry, I think of Michael J. Fox in Back to the Future — one of my favorite movies as a kid. The others? Oh, I’m glad you asked. I’d say Ghostbusters and The Goonies belong in my top three as a kid. (Ghostbusters 2 never happened, in my opinion.) Thankfully, my tastes have matured considerably since then. I’d say my favorite movies today are Caddyshack, Stripes, Wedding Crashers and Anchorman. Oh, and Chocolat. Movie magic.

This universal dismissal of Ghostbusters 2 is completely irrational. Look, it’s cheesy, it’s sentimental, it has Bobby Brown in it, but it’s still good for several reasons: Egon’s slinky, Dr. Venkman’s World Of The Psychic, and “Then why are you came?” among them.

I was a huge Bill Murray fan as a kid. Meatballs, Caddyshack, Stripes, Ghostbusters. I was very dissappointed in Ghostbusers II as well. No joke, but Ghostbusters III is in the works:

I heard that they want to make up for the disappointment of GB II. As long as they don’t give Aykroid creative control (he completely lost it starting with Nothing But Trouble) it might be OK. No word about Caddyshack III.

Can they make a movie called Muttbusters? How about Halladaygetters?
Can we now talk baseball? What’s new on the fat Pedro and Doc Halladay fronts? Any new rumors or info?

chocolat though? cmon dude

FIJ: Pedro is in town for a physical and could sign tomorrow. Probably wouldn’t start until August 1st. Will “rehab” in LV to get game ready. I think the best news to come out about Halladay was Howard’s comments about how the window of opportunity is now and this core team might not get another chance.

I must say if Howard wasn’t in the derby I wouldn’t have watched. It’s a bit of a snooze fest!?

Karen, Saw that but thanks for the update. I saw a post on a blog perdicting that Fat pedro (I promised to call him that no matter how he does) will have 2 or 3 decent starts and tehn either end up on DL or start getting hit around only to be replaced by, (get ready) Bastardo or Lopez. I’m happy to see that Rube and the owners are being free with their money, but I think there are beter ways to spend it. (Like sending me a check, for example)

While it’s a chick flick, ‘Chocolat’ was a very cool movie. I wouldn’t put it in my all-time list though. Best chick flick? ‘Sleepless in Seattle’. But I’m more of a ‘Bridge on the River Kwai’, ‘Godfather I and II’ kind of guy. I guess that dates me.
I didn’t see a minute of the HR derby. ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ. JMO.

Phan52: I too am old school on movies: Bogie, Grant, Newman, etc. A few favs of all time “Big Sleep”, “North by Northwest”, “Butch Cassidy”, “Coolhand Luke”. Agree can’t go wrong with “Sleepless in Seattle”.

Some high-brow humor there, eh zolecki?

Did something change about this blog? I’m having trouble posting comments because the computer keeps stating I’m going into an unsecured site.

It figures that would post….

In general, watching the Homerun Derby is kind of like seeing a lousy fireworks display. You have to wait forever for a decent rocket to explode high in the sky. Most of the rockets are duds. And they take forever to reload and launch. You say a few “Ooooo”s and “Ahhh”s and reflect on the time that was wasted. Last year was different. What Josh Hamilton did was absolutely inspiring. They should’ve made a special award for him. That bat he used should’ve gone into the Hall of Fame.
