Lee Looks Like A Cy Young Winner

lived up to the hype.

Here are a few words on his performance last night against the Giants at AT&T Park, where he allowed four hits, one run and two walks and struck out six in a complete-game 5-1 victory over the Giants. He carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning and went 2-for-4 with a double.

“That’s pretty much vintage Cliff,” Ben Francisco said.

“I’m kind of glad I didn’t throw a no-hitter,” Lee said. “If I do that on the first try I would have to be living up to some high expectations.”

“He embarrassed us all by getting hits, throwing nine,” Cole Hamels joked. “It was fun. I think we all enjoyed how quick he works. How he gets guys out. Having a guy that really puts a lot of pressure on the other team makes it easier for our offense and for our defense because they’re always in the game. … For how he can help out (J.A.) Happ and I, it’s going to be pretty fun the rest of the year. Obviously, we’ve got him next year, too. That’s really cool. You never imagine that something like this could really be possible. He fits in really well with all of us. I think that’s even better, knowing that he’s one of us.”

“He was fun to play defense behind,” said Jayson Werth, who went 2-for-5 with a home run and three RBIs. “He gets the ball and he knows what to do. He throws strikes. He attacks the hitters. He’s good.”

“A shutout would have been nice,” bench coach Pete Mackanin joked.

What really disappointed me was the fact it didn’t rain. I so wanted to watch Lee walk on water.

WOWSERS. Works fast, challenges hitters, throws strikes. Kinda reminds you of that Carlton guy. And Cole, you should be embarrassed, no joke.

I’m trying to calm myself after watching that performance last night. I love complete games. I wish there was some way to teach pitchers to get through 6 innings without throwing 115 pitches. Guys like Lee are rare in today’s game.
I hope Cole was embarassed enough to step up and start pitching the way we all think he’s capable of pitching.

before everyone beats up on Cole, remember there’s and age difference and Cliff has much more experience, remember this could be Cole in 5 years…. that being said, Lee not only pitched like a Cy Young winner, he swung the bat like he has been an NL pitcher his whole career, did anyone else think he looked like Utley up there swinging… especially in the on deck circle… freaky…

I couldn’t believe it when I saw Madson up before the ninth. I didn’t want to see him or Lidge in that game last night.

If the other Phillies starters get anything from Lee, I hope it’s how fast he works. He’s not afraid of the strike zone.

Was at the game last night, what a sight. Cliff Lee is the real deal! So many broken bats and bewildered Giants. I loved every minute of it.

That’s normal for lee. Believe it or not he was like that all of last season consistently. Working ahead and consistently pounding the strike zone. He didn’t get much run support this season or his record would have been a lot better.

Yeah..you guys are really lucky to have him..

A no-hitter into the 6th!!! Two hits! Including a double! A run scored! A complete game!!! Welcome to Philadelphia, Cliff Lee!!!

OK, General Lee is on-board for at least the rest of this season and next. Terrific. Now the Phillies need to move some of their pitching excess — on the roster, in Allentown and on rehab — to get a catcher who can hit more than his weight. Could Cliff Lee be a DH for Boffo Bako? Really, Chris Coste was a hitting stud compared to Boffo Bako.
There has to be a better catcher somewhere.

General Lee? We all know what happened to him, don’t we?

I wish I could’ve seen more the game than I did. Can’t wait for his CBP debut. He seems a bit like Utley, very intense. Also when I heard that his son is a leukemia survivor, it just added another plus. Welcome to Philadelphia, Mr. Lee. We’re glad you could join us!

Cliff Lee turned the bullpen into a bunch of “Maytag” guys. You know, those stupid TV commercials where the Maytag repairman sits in the shop waiting for a call that never comes because the wahing machines are so reliable and never breakdown. That’s Cliff Lee. So reliable, never breaks down.

now if everyone kicks it up a notch and starts pitching to their abilities, the Phillies will have the ROTATION of DOMINATION

I wonder when Shane is going to be able to play again. I hope the swelling in his knee goes down soon. This whole season, he has been a reliable catalyst on days J-Roll doesn’t show up. Our offense is much more dangerous with him in the line-up.

Todd, is Shane in the staring line-up tonight?

sorry, I meant “starting” line-up…
