Hamels Struggles, Pitching Staff Reaches 12

hamels 0322.jpgThe line score is ugly: 4 innings, 9 hits, 7 runs, 6 earned runs, 1 walk, 2 strikeouts and 1 home run.

Cole Hamels did not have a good day today in a 9-7 victory over the Yankees at Bright House Field, but there is no reason to panic. He had a bad day, although Hamels seemed OK with the way he pitched.

“I was a lot happier because I felt like I had more energy going into the fourth inning,” he said. “Just every inning in general. I felt like I had a good rhythm. I felt comfortable from the stretch and the wind up, so that’s definitely coming.

“Now is the time I really want to get the fastball going, try to hit my spots. I feel like I was doing a pretty good job up until the fourth inning when I was cutting it off unintentionally and I wasn’t releasing the ball where I wanted to.”

The Phillies optioned Mike Zagurski to Minor League camp, which leaves the team with 12 healthy pitchers: Roy Halladay, Hamels, Joe Blanton, J.A. Happ, Kyle Kendrick, Jamie Moyer, Ryan Madson, Danys Baez, Chad Durbin, Jose Contreras, David Herndon and Antonio Bastardo.

Unless the Phillies make a trade, sign a free agent or Brad Lidge or J.C. Romero miraculously speed up their recovery from offseason elbow surgeries, these are the Phillies’ 12 pitchers on Opening Day.

not to state the obvious, but this really leaves us 14 pitchers for 12 spots. Whose places are lidge and Romero taking when they are ready to join the team? The obvious two are Kendrick and Bastardo. Herndon is a rule 5 and if cut we loose him, while both KK and Bastardo have options. I hate for either to have to go down as they’ve earned a spot on this team. Moyer better pitch VERY well to justify his place. Not just good, but better then what KK would have given us (and yes, I know he’s “untested”)

and yes, I promised not to state the obvious and did so anyway…

Let’s keep our fingers crossed that this was just a bad outing for Hamels and not an instant replay of 2009?!?

Not sure who ” fan in Jerusalem” is calling ” untested” . BUT it can’t be KK. He’s won numerous games for the Phillies in the last 2 years. While Bastardo is RELATIVELY “untested” , I’d rather trust HIM in a LATE inning to get a ” K” on a tough lefty hitter than softy tosser Moyer who needs a pitcher’s Strike zone to get a GOOD Double A player to whiff. As for Herndon, YES he is “untested” BUT he throws a REALLY heavy SINKER ( with a developing slide piece)to stay, as long as he pitches well. Take the same chance on him as you did with Shane, RAJ. This team needs to infuse some young talent little by little . Otherwise, here comes mediocrity possibly as early as 2011 or 2012.

KK was sent back to the minors, Dolfan, because he sucked his sophomore season. Since then, he has developed a breaking ball which is basically untested. If what we have is the same KK as 2008, then he is not going to be any good. The “New” KK, who based on this spring and a few innings last sept has overcome his issues. is untested. As for Bastardo, he had a good run as a starter last year before getting hurt, and a good post season in teh Pen, but any rookie is, by definition, untested.
