Blanton to DL Three to Six Weeks

The Phillies announced this morning that right-hander Joe Blanton has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with a mildly strained left oblique muscle.

He is expected to miss anywhere from three to six weeks. The best case scenario is Blanton rejoins the rotation sometime during the Phillies’ nine-game road trip April 20-28 through Atlanta, Arizona and San Francisco. In the meantime, Kyle Kendrick joins the rotation. Expect Andrew Carpenter to take Kendrick’s place in the bullpen.

Blanton, who has never been on the DL in his career until today, strained the muscle while throwing in the bullpen yesterday. He will not throw again until April 8 at the earliest.

“We’ll progress him as tolerated,” team physician Michael Ciccotti said.

J.A. Happ and Clay Condrey suffered similar injuries last season. Happ strained his right intercostal muscle and missed two starts in September. Condrey landed on the DL with a strained left oblique June 19. He got reinstated July 17, but landed back on the DL on July 23 and didn’t return again until Sept. 15.

Ciccotti said Blanton’s injury is milder than Condrey’s.

“His was move severe,” Ciccotti said.

This is a blow to the rotation, but it’s also a blow to the bullpen. The Phillies already were thin with just Ryan Madson, Danys Baez, Chad Durbin, Jose Contreras, David Herndon and Antonio Bastardo. Kendrick could have pitched himself into a pretty solid role with Brad Lidge and J.C. Romero on the DL. But without him they have one less option.

More about the Phillies’ lack of pitching depth.

Kendrick will start Wednesday against the Nationals.

The Zo Zone is on Facebook and Twitter. His Phillies book “The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly” is available online, and at Delaware Valley bookstores!

I’m listening to WIP and Glen Macanow suggests: “Calling Dr. Martinez”. Not a bad idea in my opinion?!

Too early to be calling Pedro, karen. They have Kendrick stretched out and ready to go. The problem is the bullpen.

Phan52: True, but the bullpen is thin and Kendrick would’ve been great for long relief. Todd Z was just on WIP and sorta agreed with Macanow. He said he wouldn’t be surprised if they did something like sign Pedro in June/July like they did last yr. especially if the pitching staff is struggling a bit.

Another option is Smoltz. He could do either role. The problem is, what do you do when Blanton comes back?

Pedro is turning into the Brett Favre of baseball…doesn’t want to work all year (like Favre skipping training camp), but June or July might be ok…lol If this injury thing continues, I would not be surprised if he is back mid-season.

Is it time to panic yet? When is the right time to talk about that stupid trade that we are banded if we mention his name Cliff?who still have not brought it up!

@cscd1111: You mean the same Cliff Lee who has been dealing with injury all Spring and is also starting the season on the DL?

What about Ryan Vogelsong? He is an experienced starter.

Still hoping it is an April Fool’s joke….glad it’s only a mild strain. Looking forward to seeing you back in the rotation soon, Joe.

Panic accomplishes nothing positive. Kendrick is more than capable of filling in for Blanton. As for Martinez, been there and done that. No thanks. The most experienced LESS talented option is not always a good option. Actually, this maybe a Blessing, in disguise, for the Bullpen. It now creates a longer term opening for a guy who deserves to be on the 25 man roster longer than 10 days or so ( Lidge and Romero out). Contreras has been a major disappointment soo far. Herndon has been a God send.

Joe Blanton has oblique muscles???
