No More Taser Guns

The Phillies released the following statement regarding Monday night’s tasering of a fan who had run onto the field:

“The Police Department is conducting an investigation into the use of the Taser gun on the field jumper on Monday night. The Phillies have had discussions at the same time with the Police Department concerning future incidents of field intrusion. It has been agreed that in ordinary circumstances involving field intrusion, the Phillies game day security personnel will make the apprehension of the field jumper and turn him over to the Philadelphia Police on the field for handcuffing and subsequent charging. If greater force is necessary, requiring the assistance of Philadelphia Police in making the apprehension, such assistance will be employed.

“The Phillies will continue their policy of prosecuting all persons coming onto the field during a game to the maximum extent of the law, which could include imprisonment up to one year and a $2,500 fine.”

So, who makes the determination as to what constitues “ordinary cirumstances?” How long will it take a Philadelphia policeman to respond to an attack on Werth or Ibanez? Too long, I’m guessing.
I say, keep the Tasers handy and use them. Fans don’t belong on the field. If they did, it wouldn’t be a class 3 Criminal Tresspassing felony.

I’d be willing to bet some money that Monica Seles is in favor of tasing fans who run onto the field. Too soon??

no dmrock, too late

Mule: Keep doing whatever it is you’re doing!! You called for a quality start from KK and we get a shut out. (Too bad that Lidge didn’t get a save).

All of a sudden the pitching is looking decent. If this keeps up we’re going to roll……

Darn. And I had my “Taser! Taser!” chant down pat.

I think the ball girls need to be equipped with tasers as well to deal with those rowdy fans who fall onto the field in pursuit of foul balls. Better yet, summary executions can replace the seventh inning stretch.

Why not just give the players the fans? In fact, I’m thinking now of a baseball spin off game where everyone has taser guns, and they are completely legal to use. It would eliminate run-downs…

They do not actually rule out tasers with this statement. The term “greater force” would seem to cover anything the officer deems necessary, which should include tasers. I just hope no one gets knifed a’la Monica Seles before the cop has a chance to intervene.

why not have the non playing pitchers from both teams throw fastballs at them? SOmebody will surely get him in the chest, and it would be entertaining as well. No need to run after the idiot, just bean him from 150 feet or so…Haven’t we killed the subject, yet? Let’s get back to baseball and tonight’s game people. Doc is going so we should only need 1-2 runs to win

perrisphain, the ball girls already carry mace for protection, lol
