Howard to the DL, Mayberry Up

The Phillies just announced they have placed Ryan Howard on the 15-day disabled list with a sprained left ankle.

John Mayberry Jr. has been called up to take his place on the roster, although I suspect Ross Gload and Cody Ransom will be playing some first base while Howard is out.

Yep, Howard is the 15th Phillies player to land on the DL this season: Chase Utley, Shane Victorino, Jimmy Rollins, Placido Polanco, Carlos Ruiz, Brian Schneider, Joe Blanton, J.A. Happ, Jamie Moyer, Brad Lidge, J.C. Romero, Ryan Madson, Chad Durbin, Antonio Bastardo and Howard.

So to recap: the Phillies are without their Opening Day number 3 and 4 hitters.

I am sure that Amaro could have somehow avoided this, eh pherris? Maybe Lance Berkman instead of Oswalt? He really should have known.

phan52, does non sequitur ring a bell with you?

At least all the bench players won’t be whining about rotting in the dugout all game long…….Plenty of playing time for everyone ;o(

You got that, erich. If Florida had started a righty, we’d probably see Dobbs and Gload in there. As it is we got Valdez, Ransom and Francisco. But Chooch is saving the day, and Halladay is Halladay.

CHOOCH! One hit shy of the cycle :-)

Also let’s thank the Mutts for beating the Braves (I can’t believe I just said that?!)

The Braves are feeling the heat and they really are not very good. They have a washed up Chipper batting third and Hinske batting fifith. That will never hold up over a long season.

muleman, at least Valdez plays stellar defense when he is in there. If they are going to have to use their bench, at least they have that. I watch other teams play defense and you can tell why the Phillies are a step ahead of everybody. They got a little sloppy during their slump, but they are the best defensive team in the NL.

phan: Every team has its issues. Valdez is playing WAY too much, as are most of the bench players this year. Lidge isn’t the only non-reliable closer, either. Wagner coughed up another one last night.
Part of the reason things hold together is because it is a long season, not in spite of it. There is time for adjustment.

The Phils can’t expect that the replacement players and Chooch to be able to carry this team for two weeks. The first four guys in the line (4 of the 5 regulars still playing) did NOTHING last night. They have to step up to the challenge and start doing their share, especially on the road.

The Phillies have won their first road series since the middle of June and have a real shot at a sweep with Oswalt going tomorrow.

The Phillies showed once more one of the big reasons why they have a step up on the also-rans. The major difference in last night’s game was defense. Brown and Jroll both made stellar plays to save runs and, once again, the Marlins were a little loose with their leather. I also liked that JRoll immediately lectured Brown about missing the cut-off man. Rookies give and rookies take away. Comes with the territory.

J.A. Happ game line last night…

1 IP, 6 hits, 7 ER’s, 3 BB, 1 SO, 1 HR, 49 pitches, 23 strikes.

I listened to the Astros’ game last night which was painful. Now let’s see if Oswalt can obtain redemption for his “stellar” last start.
