Chew on This

A few things to ponder following last night’s 12-11 victory over the Rockies at Coors Field:

  • The Phillies are 28-12 (.700) since a July 21 loss to the Cardinals. That’s the best record in baseball.
  • The Braves are 23-17 (.575), which is the eighth-best record in baseball. That’s why the Phillies have made up only five games in the National League East standings. If anything, we’ve learned the Braves are not the 2010 version of the ’07 and ’08 Mets. The Phillies will need to keep playing well to catch Atlanta.
  • Chase Utley and Ryan Howard seem to be emerging from their slumps. Utley has hit .538 (7 for 13) with three doubles, one home run, eight RBIs and one stolen base in the last three games. Howard has hit .250 (3 for 12) with a double, two home runs, five RBIs, two walks and three strikeouts in the last three games.
  • The Phillies went 6-1 (.857) on their seven-game road trip through San Diego, Los Angeles and Colorado. According to the Phillies’ media guide it ties for the fourth-best road trip in franchise history. They had a 7-0 trip against the Pirates and Mets in 1968, a 6-0 trip against the Boston Braves and Giants in 1915 and a 7-1 trip against the Expos, Cardinals and Cubs in 1983.
  • The Phillies have a 3.01 ERA since July 21, which is tied with the Astros for the best ERA in baseball.
  • The offense has averaged 4.86 runs per game, which ranks 10th in baseball and sixth in the National League.

SO we know the Phillies are playing very good ball, right now, but the big question is, can they maintain it and take 4 out of 6 from the Braves this month? All we need to do is stay even with the Cox’ and beat them 4 games to win the division.

Let’s hope they keep up the pace

Great stats to think and be optimistic about, Todd. It’s definitely going to be a thrilling finish to this season.

Good to see Chase Utley back, right on time for the September drive.

Weird road trip. They were supposed to have a day off yesterday, which everybody gets coming back from the west coast, but now they have to get right back into it after playing that crazy game last night. There could be some lag today or tomorrow that they will have to play through. Waiting until the team came home to add September callups almost bit them last night too. I think Wilson Valdez is the only position player who didn’t play.

Best record in baseball since July 21? You mean starting on July 22…with that game in St. Louis where I got the author of “The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly Philadelphia Phillies: Heart-Pounding, Jaw-Dropping, and Gut-Wrenching Moments from Philadelphia Phillies History” (available at fine retailers and Amazon.com) to autograph a copy of his book for me? Who could’ve predicted that? Oh wait…..I could!

Keep up the good work, Todd.

Good to see the team fight back from numerous tough breaks in the game and Bastardo to get the W. It’s going to take a strong heart/set of lungs to head down the stretch! My favorite time of the year. Only thing missing last night was hearing the bell toll for each beautiful long ball. Thanks for the great statshots, Todd.

Good to see Utley more aggressive at the plate. Werth appears to be getting there as well.

todd – thanks for the interesting & well-made points. hmmm: best road trip in 27 years? tied for best recent era in MLB? chase & ryan showing signs of emerging? actual signs of an offensive pulse? if everything does come together, this team has the potential to be formidable in the postseason. fingers crossed.

Hey Todd…is there any word on Mike Sweeney’s hand? Thanks :O)

don’t look now, but we’re only one game back…wonder where that idiot Brave’s fan is hiding out….

f-i-j, As far as the casual Braves ‘fans’ are concerned the baseball season just ended, and the entire grit-eating world is at a football game. They even stole that stupid chant from a college football team.

phan: As far as the Falcons are concerned, Atlanta hardly supports them. Plenty of tickets available. They’re even selling 2, 4 and 8-game packages on their web site. 60,000 person waiting list for Eagles tix. Atlanta is the worst sports city in America. Odd, since they’ve had some good teams. Their fans should be ashamed.
