Romero Signs A $1.35 Million Contract

J.C. Romero officially is back in the Phillies’ bullpen.

The Phillies just announced they have signed him to a one-year, $1.35 million contract. The contract includes performance bonuses.

Romero, 34, went 1-0 with a 3.68 ERA and three saves in 60 appearances last season. Left-handers hit just .217 against him, although he walked more batters (29) than he struck out (28). Romero’s inconsistencies are one reason why the Phillies pursued other left-handers before returning to him. They had agreed to a one-year contract with Dennys Reyes, but the deal fell apart. And with pitchers like Hisanori Takahashi, Arthur Rhodes, Pedro Feliciano and Brian Fuentes looking for more money than the Phillies were willing to spend, they brought back a familiar face.

Romero has a 2.60 ERA in 213 appearances since joining the Phillies in 2007. Left-handed hitters have hit just .166 against him in that time.

The Phillies will make a roster move at a later date to make room for Romero on the 40-man roster.

If JC wants to stay on the Phils and get a bigger contract next year, he’s going to have to improve his control. More BBs than Ks is unacceptible.

erichh: Today’s Jeopardy category, “The F**king Obvious.” The answer is: Romero has to do this to keep his job.
