Phillies Trade Escalona to Houston

The Philadelphia/Houston pipeline continues …

The Phillies today acquired second baseman Albert Cartwright from the Astros for left-hander Sergio Escalona.

Cartwright, 23, split last season between Single-A Lancaster and Double-A Corpus Christi. He hit a combined .294 with 30 doubles, 14 triples, 10 home runs, 55 RBI and 31 stolen bases in 127 games. Cartwright has hit .272 in his Minor League career with 20 home runs, 112 RBI and 71 stolen bases in 284 games.

Escalona, 26, spent last season with Double-A Reading, where he went 4-8 with a 3.81 ERA in 50 games. He had 53 strikeouts in 54.1 innings. The Phillies designated him for assignment last week.

Another deal with our favorite ex-GM.

Cartwright wasn’t drafted until the 36th round of the 2007 draft. Looks like the Phillies assigned him to AA Reading where they will likely also have 24 year old Harold Garcia, the guy who had the 37 game hitting streak at Clearwater last year. Cartwright didn’t appear on Baseball America’s top 10 Astros prospect list and also wasn’t on John Sickels’ preliminary top 20. The Astros did draft Delino DeShields Jr. with the 6th pick in the draft last year and plan to switch him from the outfield to second base so they consider him to be their future. The Phillies had plenty of time to see what Escalona can do. Cartwright is a good longshot gamble for someone they no longer needed.

Z,

Sounds like a we’ll-send-our-leftovers-for-your-leftovers trade on the surface, but is Cartwright a prospect or suspect? He is only 23, and had some decent numbers this season… Chase Utley eventual replacement?

All ex-GMs seem to pick the pockets of the Phillies. Is this any different? Here is to hoping that the wastrel Junior does not have the life expectancy with the Phillies that Andy “The Whale” Reid has had with the Eagles.

Simply, they had 41 men on the 40-man roster and had to make a move for any warm body.
Meanwhile, pherris has his Amaro Hate Train on the track in mid-season form.

Yeah pherris, Ed Wade has really picked our pockets. All he did was trade us a closer who was perfect for 2008, and a starting pitcher who is the answer to every trivia question about pitchers in the 00′s. Hate on.
