Giants and Yankees Talk Phillies Rotation

CC Sabathia, Joe Girardi and Bruce Bochy had Cliff Lee and the Phillies on their minds today.

Here is what they said:

Bochy, on the Phillies’ rotation: “Because of track record, I think you have to look at their staff as the best staff in baseball.”

Bochy, on Giants fans bristling at that statement: “That’s because of track record. … We’re certainly proud of our staff. I still don’t think they ever quite got the credit they deserved.”

Sabathia, on Lee’s decision to sign with the Phillies: “Cliff’s decision didn’t surprise me, because I had talked to him a couple days before. It was something he was familiar with in Philly. He loved it there, his family loved it there, and it’s always easier to go back to a place where you’ve had success and you’re familiar. You can’t blame him for that.”

Sabathia, on trying to sell Lee on New York: “What is there to sell? He knows what this organization is about, what this city is about and how we do business. It was something he was familiar with, he had success there. If there had been an opportunity for me to go back to Cleveland, it probably would have been a harder decision for me to come here. It was one of those things where he had been there before, he loved it and it was the right situation.”

Girardi, on Lee’s decision: “(Lee) I think everyone always assumes that when the Yankees go after someone, they’re necessarily going to get them. The one thing that I’ve always said is that it’s a two way street. It’s not like you have control over that player. He’s not under your control so it has to be a two-way street where Cliff accepts our offer and wants to come here. He obviously chose to go to Philadelphia and that was his choice. I really never assume that we’re going to get anyone. The only guys I know that we have in that room are the guys that are either signed or under six years in a sense.

“He was a starter that you would have penciled in and we would have known four of our starters going into spring training and we would have had probably an open competition for the fifth. Now we pretty much know three. But if you added Cliff Lee, you’re probably not able to add some of the other pieces that we were able to add, a guy like Rafael Soriano. Where there’s questions about our starting rotation, if we were to add Cliff Lee, there would have been questions probably about our bullpen more.”

Thanks to MLB.com teammates Bryan Hoch and Chris Haft for these quotes.

do you think you could clear out some of your old related articles? after reading this story, I looked at your “related articles” and one was “Hamels Goes Back to Philadelphia with Shoulder Soreness”. You could imagine my panic a day into Spring training…

I want his shirt! Where do I find that shirt!? As being a Philadelphian and a Phillies fan in the South I want to represent!

Sabathia can opt out of his contract with the Yankees after this season. Maybe he’ll want to join his buddy Cliff Lee :-)

Phan52: Ehhh. I can do without CC, honestly. He’s good, but not as good as people seem to think he is (in my mind, at least). When he’s not pitching in the (rather weak) NLC, his ERA is around the same as Cole’s… And his post-season record isn’t exactly awe-inspiring – especially considering how many times he’s gotten there.

I want that shirt as well, can’t find it anywhere online. Zo- can you ask Lee where to find the “BOOM” shirt?

I feel like everyone is obsessed with the shirt, including me… For that reason, I took it upon myself to create as close to a replica of shirt as I possibly could. I still have to “clean” some things up, but the shirt will look like this. If anyone is interested, just let me know…
