Finally, Baseball

The Phillies open their Grapefruit League season this afternoon against the Yankees at George M. Steinbrenner Field.

Here is the Phillies’ lineup:

  1. Pete Orr, 2B
  2. Ross Gload, DH
  3. Raul Ibanez, LF
  4. Ryan Howard, 1B
  5. Ben Francisco, CF
  6. Domonic Brown, RF
  7. Jeff Larish, 3B
  8. Brian Schneider, C
  9. Wilson Valdez, SS

Charlie Manuel said he scratched Jimmy Rollins from the lineup because Rollins missed the last two days of workouts. He said Rollins will play tomorrow in the Grapefruit League home opener against the Yankees at Bright House Field.

Chase Utley is not playing because of what Manuel has called soreness in his knees and legs. I’m not sure what to make of it. Utley would not say this morning what the problem is, but it’s something. Keep an eye on this, especially if Utley isn’t in the lineup early next week. Jayson Werth missed the first three Grapefruit League games in 2009 because he “wasn’t ready to play,” the implication being Werth wasn’t in baseball shape. The difference here is Manuel said Utley has soreness, although he said it only comes from rigorous workouts.

Is there cause for concern? Utley played coy when asked what’s wrong.

“If there’s cause for concern you’ll be the first to know,” Utley said.

How is it, in Rollins and Utley, the Phils have the 2 oldest 32-year-olds on the planet? Hmmmm.. makes you start to wonder….

john, You are right and based on Chase’s habit of getting injured and Charlie’s habit of covering for him, I have got to wonder whether he is hurt or injured in someway. hmmm.

Meanwhile, in today’s “B” game, Danys Baez coughed up 5 runs, 5 hits and a walk in two-thirds of an inning against Toronto minor leaguers. There’s $2.75 million they could have used to pay Charlie and keep Lopes. What a waste of a roster spot.

Why did Rollins “miss the last two days of workouts”? If it’s his legs we may as well stick a fork in him. And as far as Utley’s concerned he had to be injured in some fashion at the end of last season. It was obvious when he would swing the bat or even throw the ball. I admire his grit but he has to think about what’s best for the team. If he could could be productive while playing injured it would be a different story. He was a liability in the playoffs. Valdez should have been in the lineup instead. Those are two major concerns there.

Rollins was at some Motown thing in DC with Obama, so he missed the practices. ANNOYING! It’s time to work, not play, Jimmy!

If I were the Nats I’d be pretty ticked off that my $126M player isn’t in baseball shape.

@Phannan – if you read the article Jayson Werth not being in shape is not in regards to this season. It says 2009!! Therefore your statement makes no sense. Might want to actually get the facts straight before making a rude comment.

phannan: Rollins was at a Motown thing with Obama?? I’m hoping that’s a joke. It probably isn’t though. Why he would want to be anywhere other than with the team training is disturbing to me as well as why the team would allow it. I’m not one to complain about salaries ever. As long as the players are dedicated. They should dock his pay for the time missed.
