Brown Fractures Right Hand, Surgery Likely

Domonic Brown‘s chances to win the everyday job in right field evaporated today when he fractured his right hand.

Surgery is likely, which would sideline him three to six weeks.

Brown fractured the hook of the hamate bone swinging at the first pitch in his first at-bat in the second inning against the Pirates at Bright House Field. He finished the at-bat, singling up the middle to end a 0-for-15 start to his Grapefruit League season. Brown left the game before the top of the third, returning to the clubhouse and leaving the ballpark quickly for an x-ray.

Brown will fly early next week to Philadelphia, where hand specialist Randall Culp will evaluate him. If the initial x-ray is accurate, surgery seems inevitable.

“Probably,” Ruben Amaro Jr. said. “We won’t know until it’s definitive. What the x-ray reveals right now is what is believed to be a fracture.”

Brown’s loss practically guarantees Ben Francisco will be the Opening Day rightfielder, although Amaro declared nobody a winner in those sweepstakes. Francisco, Brown and John Mayberry Jr. opened the spring as the top contenders to replace Jayson Werth. Brown struggled early as he tried to get comfortable with a new stance at the plate.

“Nobody has won our right field job, but Ben has done very, very well for us,” Amaro said.

Francisco went 2 for 3 with one double, one home run and one RBI against the Pirates. He is hitting .421 (8 for 19) with two doubles, one triple, two home runs and six RBIs in seven games this spring.

Now we’re going to pretend that he could “win the everyday job in right field?” Did he ever have a chance to win the everyday job? Platooning was always his best chance this season.
At least the pitching staff is still healthy.

Does Brown get sent down to the minors before the season starts or does he stay on the Phillies roster until he recovers from his injury and then get sent down to fix his swing?

So sorry about Dom’s hand, but have to agree he was unlikely to make the team after such a poor showing through winter and spring ball. Wishing him a speedy recovery – maybe the down time will help him clear his head and he’ll come back in better form.

GOODYEAR, Ariz. ? Cleveland Indians third baseman Jason Donald sustained a badly bruised left hand Saturday, but didn?t break it when he was struck by a pitch from Chicago White Sox starter Gavin Floyd. X-rays taken were negative. Donald?s hand is swollen and he will likely miss a few days to let it heal.

There’s some Phillies news for ya.

D. Brown will go on the DL , if as suggested, he is operated on. I’m guessing a 6 week recovery period andthen extended spring training and then a minor league stint , probably until June or July. He may or may not see the ML Roster again this year. RAJ will now get yet another chance to make a move that Phillies fans didn’t see coming to solidfy RF unless you are naive enough to think that Ben Francisco ( a pretty good , not great player) is as consistentlygood as he is now showing.

As for Jason Donald ‘s injury, not sure why a phillies fan should care as he is no longer a Phillies player.

dolfanman: Sorry to interrupt your (obviously) thought-out scenario of the future of the organization, but I just thought it was ironic that two former Phillies were involved in a spring training incident.
Return to your conjecture…
