Manuel Signs Two-Year Extension

It’s official.

Charlie Manuel has signed a two-year contract extension with the Phillies. Manuel is signed through the 2013 season. Terms were not discolosed, but it is believed to be in the $7 million to $8 million range.

“We are pleased to have come to terms with Charlie,” Amaro said in a statement. “He has been an integral part of the success we’ve had over the past several years. There was little doubt that he was going to continue to be our skipper past his current contract and we look forward to the next three years with the hopes of continued success.”

The Phillies have had the best record in the National League (544-428) since Manuel’s first season in 2005. He also has led the team to four consecutive National League East titles (2007-10), two NL pennants (2008-09) and one World Series Championship (2008).

Manuel is one of only two managers in NL history to win four-straight division titles since divisional play began in 1969 (Bobby Cox won 14-straight with Atlanta, 1991-93; 1995-2005).

Manuel and Amaro will meet with reporters at 10 a.m. to discuss the deal.

From yesterday: the Phillies react to Chase Utley‘s injury and Tigers third baseman Brandon Inge said Utley should be ready to play through a lot of pain this season.

I understand that the contract include a nice financial package as well as a RF and 2B who can field AND hit and whom are both healthy.

This means Charlie will retire with the most wins of any Phillies manager. Currently he’s about 50 wins behind Danny Ozark and about 160 behind Gene Mauch.

Congratulations to Charlie! But I really mean congratulations to the Phils and us phans too! Stay lean and mean for three more years Charlie! lol
