Romero to DL, Zagurski Recalled

The Phillies placed left-hander J.C. Romero on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right calf. They recalled left-hander Mike Zagurski from Triple-A Lehigh Valley to take his place.

Zagurski is 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA and one save in three appearances this season. He has allowed two hits and struck out seven in 3 1/3 innings. He went 2-3 with a 3.27 ERA and three saves in 52 appearances last season in Lehigh Valley. He had 71 strikeouts in 52 1/3 innings.

Our bullpen still sucks. It’s been about 3 years since we’ve had solid late inning relief (7th, 8th, 9th) all at the same time. Hasn’t anyone figured out that Romero was only good because he was juicing and now his body is broken down and for whatever reason we can’t seem to live without him and his inconsistencies. 2008, where have you gone?

ugh.

At this rate, Zagurski is probably an upgrade for Romero anyway.

Nick, that comment was spot on. However Madson still is performing on a solid level, but one guy in a bullpen doesnt do it. Contreras is doing a good job so far as well, but as far as danys baez, romero, kendrick…ugh im sick to my stomach.

3 years since there were good 7-9 inning guys at the same time? I would say just last season those roles were nailed down pretty well. Contreras (3.34 ERA) took care of the 7th, Madson (2.55 ERA) had the 8th, and Lidge (2.96 ERA) held down the 9th.

Last year was pretty good, but there was still no reliable lefty to throw in late innings like with Romero (2.75 ERA) in 2008. If the Phils had the lead in the 7th the game was pretty much over. Along with timely hitting, late relief was key to winning in the 08 World Series. But right now, if our starters can’t go 6 or 7 it just feels like a circus act with Baez and Kendrick throwing like amateurs. Let’s just hope Zagurski won’t be needed. I really hope Bastardo can become as promising as he looks at times. I really wish Charlie would give him whole 7th instead of just against lefties. I’ve seen too many games lost by Charlie over-managing. This will be a real test for Lidge this year. I think the most we can hope for is that he gets somewhere close to last year’s performance. It’s not going to be too pleasant in Philly if he comes back and can’t throw 90 mph.

For now, I’ll keep saying what I say every year: It’s April, and once it gets warmer everything should fall in place.
