Rollins Back on Top

Charlie Manuel made his first truly significant lineup change of the season, following one run in 14 innings Sunday against the Mets.

Jimmy Rollins is back on top.

Here’s tonight’s lineup against the Nationals:

  1. Jimmy Rollins, SS
  2. Shane Victorino, CF
  3. Placido Polanco, 3B
  4. Ryan Howard, 1B
  5. Ben Francisco, RF
  6. Raul Ibanez, LF
  7. Pete Orr, 2B
  8. Brian Schneider, C
  9. Cole Hamels, P

Why does Charley insist on starting Ibanez. The man is killing the Phillies. He can’t hit and his fielding is less than adequate. He should give Mayberry a chance. Let him start for 10 games. Let’s see if he can hit right handed pitching.

One problem, Ibanez is still starting. He needs to be pulled for a while.

I like that JRoll is leading off. He may not have the best OBP for a leadoff hitter, but he kows how to get in scoring position, and the Phillies win when he scores.

Is Ibanez out of options? Get him down to the Iron Pigs for a while. Thats what will happen when D Brown gets healthy anyway- that guy is already raking in the minors.

Ibanez is a veteran and he can refuse any demotion to the minors. Remember the soap opera that transpired in New York last year? Ollie Perez had an ERA around 6 and the team asked him to accept a demotion to the minors to get back on track. He flatly refused and sat on the big league bench the rest of the year, save for a few mop-up relief appearances.

On the contrary, in 2008 Brett Myers, despite the immature reputation he had, willingly accepted a demotion request from management and it completely turned around his season.

Brett turned his CAREER around. He’s been a solid #2 starter since then.

Why bat Hamels 9th when he’s a better hitter than the 3 guys in front of him?

It’s simple why Ibanez is still playing. don’t act so surprised either. I’d rather Mayberry play too. But Charlie sticks with guys longer than any other manager. He’s probably hoping Ibanez gets back on track like he did last year in the 2nd half. I think you can’t afford to wait when the offense is scoring 1 run in 14 innings against the Mets, but he’s the 4 time NL East champ manager not me. Ibanez will break out of this. But at his age I don’t think he’d be more productive then Mayberry hen he does. That’s why I want Mayberry in. I suppose he wants another lefty in the lineup too.

I just saw Wes Chamberlin play in an independent league game. He went 4 for 4 with 2 doules and 2 home runs. How awesome would he look in a Phils uni now? Worth a shot it seems to me.

Things worked out pretty well for Raul tonight, I should say.

He’d been in a slump, and maybe, now, he can break out of it. Nobody expects Raul to bat .600 for the season, but neither should anybody expect him to be a poor hitter, when the whole season is averaged together.

Hamels was really sharp tonight. The guy has four pitches now.

Bullpen? Bullpen? Who needs a stinkin’ bullpen?
