Update: Victorino Has Grade 1 Sprain

The Phillies hope Shane Victorino’s significantly swollen right thumb is nothing serious.

They will know more in the next 48 hours.

He flew this afternoon to Philadelphia, where he visited hand specialist Randall Culp. The Phillies said after tonight’s 14-2 victory over the Marlins that Victorino has a Grade 1 sprain, which is the most mild.

“He is feeling better,” assistant general manager Scott Proefrock said.

Victorino will remain in Philadelphia and be evaluated again Friday. If he is not better he could be placed on the disabled list.

“Will he miss some time? Probably,” Charlie Manuel said before the game. “How much? I don’t know. I don’t think it’s going to be a whole lot. But I say that sometimes and the guys go from two weeks to six months. We’ll see. … He has a jammed thumb. He can’t grip a ball. And it’s hard to grip the bat, of course. They wanted to run some tests and see if something was wrong with it.”

I never saw the play, but is it possible that Shane dislocated his thumb? That happened to me 6 years ago and it took over a month to heal and I wasn’t playing sports after that. I hope he didn’t dislocate his thumb.
