So Pence Costs How Much?

If you had asked me a couple of weeks ago if Domonic Brown, Jarred Cosart and Jonathan Singleton would not be enough to acquire Hunter Pence from the Houston Astros, I would have thought you were crazy.

The Astros would jump on that deal in a heartbeat.

Or not.

Here’s what we know: The Phillies are furiously trying to acquire Pence before Sunday’s 4 p.m. trade deadline. They have dangled Cosart and Singleton, their top pitching and player prospect, respectively. The Phillies are willing to include Brown in a deal … but there are multiple reports the Astros would prefer to spin him to another team for more prospects.

In other words, Brown, Cosart and Singleton are not enough to get Pence.

Pence certainly is an immediate upgrade to the Phillies lineup, but that is a major haul to send to Houston. Pence has never had more than 25 homers, 91 RBIs, 93 runs scored, 173 hits or 58 walks in a season. His .828 OPS this season is the best of his career. His .802 OPS from 2008-11 ranks 36th out of 91 qualifying outfielders in baseball. He is a very good player, but he is more of a complimentary piece, like Jayson Werth. This tells me one thing: Ruben Amaro Jr. wants to win NOW. I don’t disagree with that thinking. You don’t know what the future holds. Sure, Roy Halladay, Cliff Lee and Cole Hamels will be in the rotation next season. But will they be healthy? Will they be as good? I think the Phillies should strike while they can, but that still seems like a ton of talent to give up for Pence.

Of course, nobody will care if the Phillies win the World Series. That’s what the Phillies are trying to do. They’ll worry about the future later.

What about Pence in the Phils lineup? His numbers don’t mean much if you only think about him in the Astros lineup…what hole would he hit out of in Philly? Who’s in front, who’s behind him? Stuff to consider.

Screw ’em. Love to have him but he’s not worth it. Turn your attention elsewhere, like LA or Tampa.

Hey Ruben…know when to hold ’em and when to fold ’em.

I think it’s worth the move as long as we don’t give up Worley in a deal. I’m not convinced Brown is going to be that great and you never know how prospects are going to work out.

If that offer is true, who’s dumber: Ruben for making it, or Wade for turning it down?

WBO nails it. Terrible trade for Rube, and Wade proves again why he’s inept.

I’m sorry, but i really wish people would stop saying we need to trade Brown. Give him another year yet then make the decision. All this talk about needing a right handed hitter; we have the best record in the MLB, and that’s without this right handed hitter. If we needed one that badly our record would show it. Keep Brown.

If the Phillies trade anything more than Cosart and Singleton… which is too much already… then Ruben Amaro should lose his job. This is pure insanity. I can only hope this is a smokescreen much like the 2009 Roy Halladay failed deadline deal that lead to Cliff Lee instead.

keep brown, trade Worley. He’s another Happ, Kendrick and Bystom. He’s not nearly as good as his numbers make him out to be.Brown, however, despite the bumps will be a all star for many years to come

How do you know how Happ and Kendrick are going to turn out at the end of the day? Let’s talk Ferguson Jenkins, Ryne Sandburg or Julio Franco. Do any of these names even ring a bell with you?

Pence isn’t much of an upgrade in the 5 hole. Certainly not at that price! His numbers aren’t good vs SF or ATL. I’d rather trade less for Ludwick or Spilsburg or offer Singleton and Cosart for Ethier.

To answer your question, yes theyll be healthy and yes theyll be as good or better. And Wade is like that owner in fantasy football who wont trade anyone on his roster no matter how good of an offer you send to him. Just move on. This team is obviously great already. Theres a whole month ahead of us for Rube to pick up a little addition after a few more teams, like the Reds maybe or the Dbacks or Rays, to drop out of their playoff races and make some nice veterans available on the waiver trade block that could help the bullpen or provide a bench bat.

Only one hang up, as the team with the best record, the other 28 teams have a shot first.

4 for 1 Pence deal coming down. Singleton just yanked from game. Worley and Brown are not included.

JUST IN !!! Phils get Pence in a 4 player deal !!!

Pence pulled in 5th inning
