Victorino Only Player Suspended in Friday’s Brawl

Here’s the release from MLB regarding Friday’s bench-clearing brawl between the Phillies and Giants:

Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Shane Victorino has received a three-game suspension and an undisclosed fine for his actions in the top of the sixth inning of his Club’s Friday, August 5th game against the San Francisco Giants at AT&T Park.  Joe Garagiola Jr., Senior Vice President of Standards and On-Field Operations for Major League Baseball, made the announcement.

Victorino’s aggressive actions prolonged the bench-clearing incident between the Clubs.  His suspension had been scheduled to begin tonight, when the Phillies are to play the Los Angeles Dodgers at Dodger Stadium.  However, he has elected to appeal.  Thus, the discipline issued to him will be held in abeyance until the process is complete.

In addition, undisclosed fines have been issued to Phillies thirdbaseman Placido Polanco, Giants pitcher Ramon Ramirez and Giants catcher Eli Whiteside for their roles in the incident.

What a crock. Whitside was an instigator by jumping up and down like a fool and just heated Vic up. I get Vic getting 3 for pushing the ump and then spearing the hitting coach but she should not have been the only one.

That is absolutely ridiculous! Pitchers are allowed to throw at a batter without consequences, but batters are not allowed to defend themselves? What was Victorino supposed to do? He didn’t throw a punch, and even after the beaning, Whiteside was jumping up and down in his face as if saying “bring it on,” and then he tackles Polanco. What a joke! Whiteside, Ramirez and Victorino should all be suspended a game, and then just move on.

Eli Whiteside should be suspended just for looking like a clown.

Wow…that is a load of crap. So pitchers can now throw at guys without fear of suspension, even if it is blatantly intentional? And then teammates can tackle guys to escalate the situation, also with no real consequence? This smells fishy.

I understand Shane shoved the umpire, which is very bad so I have no problem with the 3-games if the Giants players got at least one game each for starting it. But this ruling gives the impression that it was all Shane and it is nothing but a slap on the wrist for the Giants players who started the whole incident.

And Polanco? All he did was rush to help Shane with what appears to be intent to get Shane out of there. Instead, he gets tackled and then fined? Ridiculous.

I agree, it does seem odd that all the Giants got was a slap on the wrist, even though they CLEARLY started the fight, and Shane gets a suspension.

To quote Ace Ventura: Pet Detective: “Somethin’ ain’t sturring the Kool-Aid, man.”

That is just ridiculous and to quote L.A., MLB is gutless. Three players deserved suspensions.

I just don’t get it……Nothing happens to cry baby Giants and to fine Polanco ? What the heck is that about. I agree Shane should not be pushing the umpires but to say the pitcher, who started it and that stupid looking catcher thinking he was a boxer – I’m a 58 year old woman and I think I could kick his butt, lol.

This is bogus. So, the guy who threw at Shane doesn’t get suspended? That’s great.
Baseball fights are the most ridiculous activities in sports. Two guys with weapons lose them and run at each other bare handed. Then, the bullpens have to empty and 20 guys run 400 feet to stand around. They could have just fought in the bullpens.
But men are men, and God forbid the two of them settle it on the field without 48 other guys running in. Hockey fights are stupid, but at least they allow the two combatants to fight it out and then order is restored. MLB needs to figure out a way to keep the benches from emptying and just let it work itself out. It’s the only game that allows benches to empty to settle an argument between two players.

Whiteside should get at least 5 and rameriz should get at least 3. If whiteside didnt tackle polanco then the ftherer would have been no fight.

next time we face the giants i suspect many bats will “slip” out of our hitter’s hands and end up flying towards the pitcher’s mound. “oops, Sorry, good think you ducked”

The only faux pas Victorino did was pushing the umpire out of the way. That’s probably what got him the three games. However, the only players not getting at least a game suspension is ridiculous.

Sorry folks, gotta disagree, Shane deserved it all the way. Pushing the ump, charging into the fracas and prolonging it. His macho BS was just that and will cost him and the team. Whiteside got between himself and his pitcher, which is exactly what he would be expected to do. And despite what we may think, it’s debateable that the throw was intentional.

Debateable? You’re kidding, right? He hit him square in the back. His frustration was over the top, as he was letting the game get out of hand, without even mentioning that JRoll stole 2B.

And please…Whiteside did a lot more than get between Shane and the pitcher. What he did to Polanco was chickenshit and could be the reason he is hurt right now. Victorino is a knucklehead and deserved what he got, but MLB got this all wrong.

u live in SF, Jimmy?

Uh no, F_I_J. Live in West Chester and I’m a long time season ticket holder. But stupid is as stupid does and while I love Shane’s fire as a player, he made a small thing into a big thing, just to satisfy his ego. IMHO.

Karen, they admitted that the throw was intentional, so there for it makes him wrong. Again, as I wrote on MLB facebook page, the giants players were acting like children, and from what I understood, Shane went back in cause Ruiz was being assaulted by The Panda.
