Lee Homers, Makes Sure Kendrick Knows It

Cliff Lee touched home plate, looked toward the visitor’s bullpen 360 feet away, brushed his right hand with his left hand like a bank teller counting out cash and smiled.

It was not a home run celebration.

It was a message to Kyle Kendrick, who was sitting in the bullpen, to pay up. Lee and Kendrick are in a home run competition and Lee had just blasted his second homer of the season in the seventh inning of last night’s 2-1 victory over the Dodgers. Lee said he thought about Kendrick “pretty much instantly” when the ball sailed over the right-field wall.

“It’s just a friendly wager,” Lee said. “It’s a little side deal.”

So what are the stakes?

“I think we’re going to keep that between us,” he said. “We can call it dinner or whatever you want to call it.”

Shortly after Lee’s homer Roy Oswalt called the bullpen to send a message to Kendrick, although bullpen coach Mick Billmeyer had to hang up because he was trying to get Ryan Madson loose.

Kendrick played off his mounting deficit. He trails, 2-0.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” Kendrick said. “He owes me.”

If the Phillies do not have at least 3 of the top 5 contenders for the Cy Young Award so far this year then something is wrong. And my order among these three thus far would be Hamels, Halladay, Lee.

Halladay will get it on reputation alone. Not that he wouldn’t be very deserving.

Big difference between very deserving and most deserving. My choices by gut alone would be Lee, Hamels, Halladay in that order. Still have 6+ starts apiece to sort it out though. Supposedly Don Mattingly, lamenting having to face the Phillies staff, stated how tough it is facing Halladay, Lee and then the Phillies ace, meaning Worley. The guy does have a sense of humor.

All three (Hamels, Halladay, Lee) are neck -n- neck. Worley should be a strong contender for Rookie of the Year.

Worley got too late a start. ROY has to be Kimbrel, unless he fall flat on his face down the stretch.

this is the best team ever, and i love how much fun they have while playing this game

Kendrick on Jim Rome Show this afternoon, he said he now owed Lee dinner. Why would Kendrick make such a bet since he knows he won’t get that many ABs with his shuffle between starting and the pen?

Maybe because he wants to have a little fun? It can be fun, you know.

I thought Hamels might have a couple of dingers by now. Still time though for him to catch up.
