Magic Number Is Six

The Phillies have some unusual logistics to consider this week.

The magic number to clinch their fifth consecutive National League East title is six. It is not impossible, but unlikely the Phils clinch the division in Houston because it would require them to sweep the Astros at Minute Maid Park and the Marlins to sweep the Braves at Turner Field.

It is a little more likely the Phillies clinch Thursday, when they play a doubleheader against the Marlins at Citizens Bank Park.

So what happens if the Phils clinch with a victory in Game 1 Thursday? Would they break out the champagne and beer with a game to play just a couple hours later?

The club has made no decisions, but it seems unlikely it would celebrate in between games. Instead, the Phils likely would wait until after Game 2. It would not be ideal, but there are worse things than having to wait a few hours to celebrate a division title.

The Phillies’ magic number to clinch a postseason berth remains two. The magic number to clinch home-field advantage throughout the postseason is seven.

i say they dont celebrate till they win their 11th game of the playoffs

I’ll drink to that. And I don’t drink.

I will be there on Saturday, so I am hoping that is when they clinch.

Other than MLB selling hats and t-shirts, what’s the point of a blow-out celebration for a division title? This team has much higher goals than the division.
And celebrating between games seems to be so ridiculous that I’m not even sure why it would be considered.

So muleman, I can assume your not buying a “Five Straight NL East Divsion Titles” hat or t-shirt.

Agree. A champagne-spraying celebration after clinching the Diviwsion is pointless. Light up a cigar, be happy, and get ready for the Playoffs. Everyone, including the players themselves, knows that anything short of a World Series win is a failure this year. Unfortunate, but true.

The point is that winning a division title over the course of a marathon 162-game season and nailing down one of only four NL playoff spots is not a small thing, no matter how high the expectations are for this team. This is not the NHL or NBA, where as many teams make the playoffs as miss them. I look forward to watching the Phils celebrate a division title for the fifth straight year. It never gets old, and it doesn’t lower the bar or cheapen future celebrations.

I agree that they shouldn’t make a big deal about it, but something should still be done to mark the occassion. I would bring out the alcohol, but I don’t think it’s neccessary to go crazy and spray it everywhere. I’d just enjoy a couple celebratory drinks.

Either way, this team obviously won’t lose sight of the true goal, so go ahead and do what they please

My guess is that they will clinch in the second game on Thursday. I hope they wait till Friday, as I will be in the house.
