Howard Speaks

Ryan Howard spoke to reporters this afternoon for the first time since Game 5 of the 2011 NLDS.

Here are some of the highlights (including some baseball and non-baseball talk):

Q: Are you ahead of where you thought you’d be?
A: I feel good, where I am right now. I mean, I don’t know what everybody else’s expectations were for me to be at this point, but I feel good. Not exactly where I want to be yet, there is still a lot of strengthening that needs to take place, change of direction and working on those kinds of things, but I feel all right.

Q: Realistic to be back in May?
A: We’ll see. Ask me in May. I’m not going to put a time limit on it. I’m going to listen to my body and see where we are.

Q: What did you do for those two months you were immobile?
A: Watch a lot of TV. A lot of TV. Lots of (Real) Housewives shows and sporting events.

Q: When did the doctors say you would feel like yourself again?
A: From what I’ve heard as far as the strength-strength, you’re probably not going to really get full strength maybe around All-St Break. Nobody has really said a whole, whole lot about that kind of stuff. But I feel good. The full strength-strength won’t come for a while.

Q: Concern it’s on your back leg and might affect you at the plate?
A: Not really. Hitting wise it’s not even a thought. I don’t think about it. I think it’s just the other stuff: the push-off, explosion, change of direction stuff.

Q: How tough is it to have made the last out of the season each of the previous two years?
A: It sucks. I’m not going to lie. It sucks. And I know how it looks to everybody, like having the season come down and you’re than guy. But I try to look at it positive like, the last two seasons I got out, I figure I’m about due. I’d love to be in that situation again. There’s going to be those time when you come through and there’s going to be those times when you don’t come through.

Q: Who’s your favorite housewife?
A: It depends on which show you’re talking about. There are so many housewives it’s ridiculous.

Q: Are you hooked on the shows?
A: I’m into it a little bit. I’m not going to lie. It’s a little intriguing. There is a little judgment in this room, I can feel it, but that’s all right.

If he is not going to be full strength until the All-Star break, then he shouldn’t come back before the All-Star break. Howard’s a power hitter and needs to be at full strength.

I hope and pray that Ryan comes back when he’s ready and not one day sooner. I have nightmares of Ryan coming back ahead of schedule, getting injured and being out for the rest of the year, and the Phils losing the WS because of lack of offense….

I really think Ryan will carry the Phils to the 2012 WSC if he comes back completely healed from his surgery. He may take a while to get his swing back but I predict he will be a force, like Napoli was last year.

The Phils have lost 2 straight playoff series because of lack of offense. So, what’s your big fear? And now we’re using Napoli in the same sentence with Howard? How many MVP awards has Mike Napoli won?

I thought you knew more baseball than you do……. Napoli sucked for half a year at Texas last year, but for the last half of the season, he was the best hitter in baseball. I believ Ryan will be that guy this year….. Now do you understand my reference, Oh Great One?

muleman, do you naturally post down to us, or do you spend hours developing that skill. Stuff like this makes me want to attack you like a merciless troll, but it ain’t worth it. You’d never care or change.

Get rid of Howard the rbi’s come when we don’t need them, strikes out too much, and don’t have a zone @ the plate watches them go by when their over the plate, and Finally swings when he can’t reach the ball!,,

John, you can’t be that clueless about what Ryan has meant to the Phils since he stole Thome’s job… I suppose you and the other haters will be happy when Nix and Wiggington only strikeout 8 times combined in April, even if they only drive in a combined 12 runs….

I think when Howard was talking about “the push-off, explosion, change of direction stuff” he was referring to running.
