Guess the Opening Day Roster

Good morning. Opening Day is next Thursday, so let’s take a look at a projected 25-man roster, if everybody other than Ryan Howard, Chase Utley and Michael Martinez are healthy.

Here are the players that look like locks:

  • CATCHER (2): Carlos Ruiz and Brian Schneider.
  • INFIELDER (5): Jimmy Rollins, Placido Polanco, Freddy Galvis, Ty Wigginton, Jim Thome.
  • OUTFIELDER (4): Hunter Pence, Shane Victorino, John Mayberry Jr., Laynce Nix.
  • STARTING PITCHERS (5): Roy Halladay, Cliff Lee, Cole Hamels, Vance Worley, Joe Blanton.
  • RELIEF PITCHERS (6): Jonathan Papelbon, Jose Contreras, Antonio Bastardo, Chad Qualls, Kyle Kendrick, Mike Stutes.

That leaves three spots for the 25-man roster.

The Phillies still need a fifth outfielder, and we’ll have an answer soon. The Phillies must let Juan Pierre know by tomorrow if he’s making the team. If he doesn’t make the team Scott Podsednik is expected to be the team’s fifth outfielder.

The Phillies need a utility infielder and unless they find somebody outside the organization it looks like Pete Orr.

If the Phillies carry 11 pitchers, they can have an extra bat for the bench. Luis Montanez and Hector Luna are in that mix because the Phillies could use another right-handed bat. If the Phllies decide to carry 12 pitchers, right-hander David Herndon and left-hander Raul Valdez or Joe Savery have a shot.

Agree? Disagree?

If it were me I’d fill the last three with Podsednick, Montenez and an infielder to be names later….Theriot.

but I think they will keep Pierre, Orr and Herndon.

I agree with you Nick. They love Pierre and Herndon. Podsednik can be sent down. I’d love for Luna or Montanez to make the team though. Herndon drives me insane, I pray they leave him off the roster.

I’m still not sure Contreras will be ready to go next week.
And I think Herndon will get the potential Contreras spot over Valdez and Savery with Savery making opening day if the go with 12 pitchers.

Charlie likes Luna so he may lobby for him in place of Orr. And there is no reason at all to keep Pierre over Podednick. Podsednick is just a better ballplayer all around.

Another interesting thing to ponder, who gets taken off the 25 when the injured infielders come back?
When Martinez comes back, Orr will be sent down, easy one there.
But when Utley and Howard come back…
Assuming Utley comes back first, they will send Galvis back down (barring an injury to Jimmy Rollins).
Now when Howard returns and resumes full time duty at first, who goes? I would guess either the 12th pitcher or that “extra bat” in Montanez or Luna.

I say thay sign Casey Blake send Orr down keep Podsednik and Pierre keep Contreras in extended spring training Herndon makes team.

like Pods, Luna, and Savery. As injured return, Luna goes for Mini. Mini goes when Utley returns (Galvis becomes Utiulity) and when Howard returns whomever is 25th man goes. That will be based on who is doing what as the season progresses

Pierre is in. I’d make the others Luna and Podsednik. I can’t help but thinking he could end up with someone else being in consideration for comeback player of the year. You can’t teach speed.

Pierre has made the team. I also would take Luna and Podsednik. I can’t help but imagine seeing him on some other team in the running for comeback player of the year. You just can’t teach speed, and that’s one thing we’ve lacked for years.
