Thome, Pierre Get the Start

Charlie Manuel hinted yesterday Jim Thome would play today in the series finale against the Pirates at PNC Park.

Here’s today’s lineup:

  1. Juan Pierre, LF
  2. Shane Victorino, CF
  3. Jimmy Rollins, SS
  4. Hunter Pence, RF
  5. Jim Thome, 1B
  6. Ty Wigginton, 3B
  7. Freddy Galvis, 2B
  8. Brian Schneider, C
  9. Vance Worley, P

Manuel is looking for a little offense. Just a little. Because the Phillies have scored just two runs in 19 innings this season, and just three in 36 innings dating to the second inning in Game 4 of the NLDS.

well, its only been 3 games but three things are obvious. 1) our offense sucks. They have been trying to move over the runners, and have managed very nicely for the most part, but it still takes a hit to bring them home.
2) our bullpen is in trouble. When hyou lead a game 4-1 after 6 and turn it over to the pen, you should win. The fact that we’re pitching KK and Hendron in 8-9 tells the entire story.
3) Charlie has to learn to use his closer in tie games on the road and have him go 2 innings if needed. I hope that if Pap was in we would have made it to the 10th.
4 (okay, so there is a 4th) while the bench is better then last year, it still needs work.

That was one of the most poorly managed games I’ve seen from Charlie. Why do you have Schneider bunt with no one on? Why is Victorino bunting with a speedy guy already on second? Even with these blunders, the blame falls on the BP. What happened to Bastardo from last year? Is his arm still tired? Not reaching for the panic button yet, but I am starting to take quick glances at it….
