Will We See ‘Babe’ Ruf Next Month?

There is a reason fans and teammates of Double-A Reading slugger Darin Ruf have been calling him Babe.

The guy can hit.

But will it warrant a promotion to the big leagues when rosters expand Saturday?

“Ruf is somebody that pops out at you,” Charlie Manuel said today at Citizens Bank Park. “He’s had an extraordinary year. Ruf is trying to hit his way to the big leagues. That’s the way that it used to be like. You had to do something to get to the big leagues. Evidentally, Ruf is an old throwback.”

Ruf is hitting .317 with 31 doubles, one triple, 36 home runs and 96 RBIs in 132 games in Reading. He has hit 18 home runs this month.

That is the type of hitter Manuel loves: a guy that can hit the long ball.

But Ruf does not necessarily have a position to play in the big leagues. Ryan Howard has him blocked at first base, and Ruf has seen very limited action in the outfield. The Phillies plan to play Ruf in the outfield in Winter Ball, which could help him find a home in the big leagues.

Manuel didn’t sound too concerned about Ruf’s defense.

“If a guy can hit, his defense gets a little bit better. That’s what I think,” Manuel said. “I want to see him whether at the end of the year or Spring Training. I’m looking forward to seeing him. I saw him on TV and it looked like he’s got a good swing. Strong.”

Manuel is walking the fine line right now between getting some of his young players looks, while trying to win. The Phillies would like to finish the season with a winning record, if possible.

So would Manuel take the risk of playing Ruf in left field, which could cost him defensively and maybe even a game?

“I think if you have a chance to win, it would be a risk,” he said. “But at the same time, I’ve done that before. I’m not sayig I won’t do that. I’ve done that before. … I would say his bat would serve us well if he can get some hits up here. That’s what it’s all about.”

Ruf hit another dinger tonight… # 37.

Ruf couldn’t have been any worse defensively than Domonic Brown was in LF tonight. His shoddy play cost them the game. If he can’t run on those knees, he shouldn’t be in the game.

Of course one of the idiots, I believe Wheeler, had to comment to the effect Brown did not look like he hustled to get to a ball without mentioning his recent knee problems.

If all Brown can do is jog at this point, they have to shut him down, find out what’s wrong with the knees and fix it. Pat Burrell could have got to that ball quicker than Brown did. I’m sure Ruf could as well.
Pierre could have got to the ball quicker but he would have thrown a lollipop to short LF. We don’t have a decent LFer now since Mayberry has to play CF.

They won with Burrell and Luzinski in left field. How much worse could Ruf be?

Plus it make these somewhat meaningless games more interesting. I think last night should be Worley’s last start for the season. He needs to go have his surgery and recoop for next season. He has not looked right all season. Hopefully it’s only the surgery and not the fact that last season was his best season and he’s really not such a terrific pitcher.

Both Pat and the Bull were good outfielders with NO range. They ran good routes, had good hands and decent arms. Ruf does none ot these things. Lets hope he can learn fast

Now, that’s revisionist history if I’ve ever seen it. The Bull was a horrible LFer by every measure and at least Burrell had a good arm. But they were both bad LFer’s.
I have no idea how Ruf can play LF because I haven’t seen him and neither have you.

Based i what I’ve heard the only position he plays is 1st base. He is suppose to get some more time playing the outfield .but he isn’t to good out there.
I did hear that he’s somewhat like Pat Burrell -Greg Luzinski type fielder and if so then hell they can live with that, especially if he can rake and bomb away to some extent as he is in the minors.

Since he can only play first base, the logical choice is to get rid of the BIG GLOVE SPITTER. Ruf can’t do any worse in the field and might be a lot better at the plate.

Teach Ruf to play 3B… Just get him up here–NOW!
