Could Chooch Sit Rest of Season?

For the first four months of the season, Carlos Ruiz played as the undisputed MVP of the Phillies.

But then Ruiz suffered an injury to his left foot in July. He has been on the disabled list since Aug. 3. Ruiz has been running every other day to test the foot, but Ruben Amaro Jr. and Ruiz spoke yesterday about the possibility he finish the season on the disabled list rather than return and possibly reinjure himself.

“Definitely, if I want to come back, I want to make sure I’m 100 percent,” Ruiz said before today’s game against the Atlanta Braves at Turner Field. “I don’t want to come back and the injury happens again. I don’t try to push it too much. Just taking it nice and easy with my running. If I feel something, stop. But so far I feel real good. It’ll be a little hard. It’s not completely gone. I still feel just a little bit.”

But Ruiz said he understands Amaro’s thinking on this.

“I got his point,” he said. “At the same time, I feel like I have to try. I have to try until the last day. It’s not like I’m going to give up. But yeah, I got his point. We’ll see. He said there is no pressure to come back. Try to be 100 percent and that’s what we’re doing right now.”

Chooch had a great year, but a really tough year when you consider how many times he was hit hard in plays at the plate also hit by pitches.
With the problem that the has with his foot it may be best for him to just sit out the
remainder of the season.
Thanks for a great year Chooch,

“try until the last day” is why we love Carlos so much. So Todd, why would Chooch merely be the Phillies’ MVP and not the league MVP? If a pitcher on a losing team (Cole or Dickey) can win a Cy Young (Most Valuable Pitcher) Award, why wouldn’t Carlos be the MVP, if he was healthy?

muleman…..I’m sure you’ll correct me if I’m wrong, but a player has to play a certain number of games, to be eligible for league MVP. And Chooch as been on DL a couple of times.

My only thought was it would be nice to have him available to give Kratz a rest. However Kratz is having a nice run I’m sure he wants to continue for as long as he can. His play last night (Fri) was amazing. Also have to give a shout out to Mayberry for his throw to the plate. Both were crucial in the victory.

Ruiz isn’t getting any younger. With the Phils relegated to spoiler, there’s no reason to increase the mileage on a 33-year old catcher. He needs to last as a starter until Valle or Joseph or another catcher takes over as starter. If the pitchers like throwing to Kratz, and apparently they do, then the decision is even easier. His great year is locked in: fan favorite, brightest spot for an otherwise dismal first half for the team, an All-Star appearance, and leader board status when he went on the DL. Get healthy and come back strong next year. Looks like Ruiz and Kratz next year.

Kratz and Frandsen should at least have wrapped up backup roles for next year. Frandsen might even serve as starter at 3B until someone better comes along. He has MLB experience at all infield positions and at least 2, if not all 3, outfield positions. Or, will Ruin go out and over pay some gimp as he is wont to do?

I totally agree, pherrisphan! I’m so sick of fans, and sports analysts, throwing these guys under the bus. They’ve made great contributions, and a big part of our *little* resurgence.

Yeah, that was a great play Frandsen made on that two-hopper by Prado. The stiff cost us the game.

Gee, how many games has Halladay cost the Phillies ? Get back to us when Frandsen catches Halladay in that department.

Are you serious? Halladay is a borderline HOFer and you are comparing him to a lifetime minor leaguer who has had a nice 33 game run?
Seriously, get a clue.

Gee, a borderline HOFer? Wow! But, again get back to us when Frandsen blows as many games for the Phillies this year as Halladay has blown.

Halladay’s only borderline because of the number of years. He’ll be a lock in a few more years.

I’ll make a deal. You keep Frandsen and I’ll keep Halladay going forward and we’ll see how that works out for you. At least Frandsen will come cheap.

The umpires really screwed up that game last night.
Too bad the only teams it really mattered to was the Reds and the teams chasing them for the division. Just another random, desultory loss for the Phillies.
