Herndon Gone

The Blue Jays claimed right-hander David Herndon off waivers today.

The Phillies removed Herndon from the 40-man roster, which was not a surprise. He is recovering from Tommy John surgery and had been eligible for salary arbitration. Plus, several relief pitchers had moved ahead of him on the depth chart. Interestingly, to make room for Herndon on their 40-man roster, the Blue Jays designated Tyson Brummett for assignment. They claimed Brummett from the Phillies last week.

The Phillies have three players eligible for salary arbitration: left-hander Antonio Bastardo, outfielder Nate Schierholtz and infielder Kevin Frandsen.

Guess the Blue Jays just really like young Phillies players/prospects.

One minor league pitcher down, about four more to go!

It there no end to this great moves by Ruin? No, I am not alluding to his being released but to his being drafted under Rule 5 and retained in the first place. Will Michael Martinez be far behind?

Michael Martinez was taken off the 40-man roster a couple of days ago. Try to keep up.

I noticed nobody claimed Michael Martinez. That means he will still be around, probably at Lehigh Valley.

I noticed that also. I was really hoping that this signaled the end of the Michael Martinez “era”. He was pretty useless.

Martinez made $900,500 in two years in the Major Leagues. Proving the grand separation between real life and pro sports.

With Zombie Mart and SMDHerndon both off of the team, there’s going to be a real dogfight for biggest bum.

The Phillies have picked up the 2013 option on Carlos Ruiz and will pay him $5 million instead of a $500,000 buyout. All option decisions must be made within three days of the end of the World Series. I think they still have options on Polanco, Wigginton and Contreras to decide. I don’t expect any of them to be Phillies in 2013.
