hit a game-tying home run in the 10th inning and a game-winning grand slam in the 11th inning in a 7-3 victory over the Marlins. Mayberry is the first player to hit two extra-inning home runs in one game since Baltimore’s Mike Young in 1987. He is the first player in baseball history to hit two extra-inning home runs in one game with the second home run a walk-off grand slam.

“It feels pretty good, I can’t lie to you,” Mayberry said. “That’s definitely a first. This is one of those days I’ll remember forever.”

Mayberry’s heroics are even more impressive, considering he started the game on the bench. He pinch-hit in the seventh inning and remained in the game as a defensive replacement for Delmon Young in right field. He became the fourth player in Phillies history to hit two home runs in a game as a substitute. He joined Ryan Howard (May 14, 2006, at Cincinnati), Steve Jeltz (June 8, 1989, vs. Pittsburgh) and Jack Knight (June 24, 1926, vs. New York Giants).

He also is the first Phillies player to hit a walk-off grand slam in extra innings since Dale Murphy on Aug. 6, 1991, against the Cubs.

The victory puts the Phillies (29-30) in position to be .500 for the first time since April 14 with a victory Wednesday. Can they finally get there? They only need to beat the Marlins, who are on pace to lose 115 games.

“We’re going to be trying like hell,” Charlie Manuel said.

Read the entire game story here, including thoughts from Manuel and Ben Revere on Bob Davidson‘s horrendous interference call in the eighth inning.

Well, it’s time for the Phils to get to, and pass, the .500 mark. To do that, the Phils will need their first +3 game winning streak of the season. Playing the Marlins helps but isn’t Cole pitching tomorrow….afternoon? It’s bad enough he’s been losing every game this year, but he usually sucks in the day games he starts. his last lost was a day game, I believe……. BUT I guess if you are going to break a curse, you’ll win regardless of statistical reality…

It’s about time something happened great for Mayberry Jr. – keep it up!

I almost gave up on the game. I turned it off after Jimmy got caught stealing 2nd, but my son had the game on upstairs and we both watched til the end. Whata finish! This was probably the most exciting game of the season (a close 2nd is when they beat Chapman and the Reds).

Didn’t Kim Batiste hit a walk off GS in 1993?

Think that was bottom of the 9th, not extra innings. Was against the Mets if memory serves.

Let’s hope this win is something the Phils can build on.

Get to .500 today & then start the climb back up into the playoff picture.

Pretty sure Charlie will pencil Mayberry’s name into the lineup card today. 🙂

I’m sure JMJ is thrilled to be on a list that includes the immortal Steve Jeltz.

John Mayberry Jr. takes the crown by a 7-3 victory over the Marlins. But the Marlins really played very well. But due to their defense problem they suffered very much. This was the most exciting match in this season.
