Deal for Cuban Might Not Happen At All

gonzalezEverybody waiting for the Phillies to officially announce an agreement with Cuban right-hander Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez might be waiting a while.

In fact, an announcement might never happen.

A source indicated to MLB.com tonight the two parties had hit a snag since word quickly spread July 26 the parties had agreed to a six-year, $48 million contract that included an $11 million option for 2019.

The Phillies have said nothing about Gonzalez since the story broke, not even as much as acknowledging anything might be cooking with the Cuban. Asked just before tonight’s game against the Cubs at Citizens Bank Park if a deal with Gonzalez might no longer happen, Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. repeatedly declined comment.

Since the agreement late last month numerous reports have mentioned scouts with questions about Gonzalez’s elbow. He had bone spurs removed from his elbow sometime within the past two years, although it has been written he had made a full recovery.

Scouts that have seen him pitch recently consider him a No. 3 starter in the big leagues, which would have helped the Phillies entering 2014.

just another example of Amaro and his camps dysfunctional decision making…everyone screams Uncle Charlie needs to go, oh really well who has been putting this teAM together year after year….not Charlie, but Rueban

Charlie is just as awful as Rube. The two deserve one another.

When will OF Julsan Kamara start playing in the Phillies system? Also there are many reports that the Phillies will sign 3B Luis Encarnacion. Still a good year of international signings for the Phillies. I hope they get Gonzalez though.

Thought is was done deal ….with the state of this team..always expect negative news

Maybe ownership is just not allowing Ruin to pull the trigger on this size of a deal so close to the end of his tenure with Phillies? We can only hope.

We should just get a rod and end it all
He makes a lot of money and can’t play
Like the rest of the team

What a fool!

To me this is a blessing! I hope it falls through as I am sure it is a bust waiting to happen.

If this guy has serious arm issues, it is good news that the signing may not happen. This means that Amaro & co. aren’t so dumb after all.

This signing sounds like a media creation. There’s a reason the Phillies haven’t commented.

What a fool!

A lot of money for a number3 or4 starter.this might be a blessing in disguise for the phillies.

Ruben is such an expert at picking the lemon among the apples that whatever happens will make him look bad. If hesigns the guy the kid’s arm will fall off and he’ll need TJ surgery. If he doesn’t sign him, he’ll win 20 games next year for the Yankees.
