The Broadcaster Search Begins

wheels and sargeEverybody wants to know who the next Phillies color commentator is going to be.

Here are a few names in a story I wrote today.

Two of Comcast’s top choices said no or aren’t interested: Brad Lidge and Dan Plesac. Either would be fantastic, in my opinion. Both are incredibly smart and likeable. Lidge has been impressive on SiriusXM. Plesac is fantastic on MLB Network. But both have reasons for not joining Tom McCarthy in the booth. Lidge told the Daily News the timing isn’t right. And Plesac has a truly excellent gig at MLB Network.

Names I have heard a lot include Doug Glanville, who works with ESPN; Buck Martinez, who broadcasts with the Blue Jays; Kevin Stocker, who has received high marks for his work with the Pac-12 and CBS Sports networks; and Mickey Morandini, who is a coach with Triple-A Lehigh Valley. Jamie Moyer‘s name has been mentioned, although I’m not certain of the interest either way. Ricky Bottalico and Ben Davis already work with Comcast, so they could be in the mix.

Who else is out there? Who do you want?

Bad news: Phillies pitching prospects Adam Morgan and Shane Watson are going to miss most of 2014 following shoulder surgeries.

I like the list. Ben Davis is a diamond in the rough. I love his insights. Plesac would have been great but the mlb gig is too good. They have a fabulous network.

I like Ben Davis a lot, on CSN, too, Marlon..

I want John Kruk. I know he’s with ESPN, but they should make him an offer he can’t refuse.

Dave Sims…Phiily boy with Mariners and does national stories. He is very good and great personality. Also a student of the game.

A lot of fans are campaigning for Ricky Bottalico. I don’t know. He’d certainly have to tone down his negativity. Yes, he “tells it like it is”. But that won’t fly in the broadcast booth.
I agree with Marlon. I like Ben Davis a lot. He really knows the game. And has a good way of making even the negative sound positive.

Like Plesac, with a gig on the MLB network I’m sure Mitch Williams wouldn’t consider joining the Phillies broadcast team. He’d be also be a great choice.

Plesac, Kruk and Mitch Williams have sweet working conditions at MLB. I can’t see them taking a job that requires all that travel.

I like Doug Glanville cause he can string more than 1 sentence together before he repeats himself unlike Ben Davidson, or Chris Coates for that matter. Better yet would be Ricky Bo who just might counteract that insufferable sycophant TMac who seems to minimize every single thing a Philly player does, just A LITTLE BIT!!!

How will they ever find someone willing to work with TMac? He’s hideous–won’t shut the f– up. Tom, shut up!!

I like Ricky Bottalico. In spite of all his baseball knowledge, he sounds like one of us fans. And like us, he gets a bit negative. So does Ben Davis. So does Larry Anderson and he’s in the Phillies’ radio booth. Be honest, the way the Phillies have performed the last few years, who wouldn’t be negative?
