Talks with Burnett Ain’t Dead Yet

burnettThe Phillies indicated late last week they did not expect to sign anybody before Spring Training opens Thursday in Clearwater, Fla.

But sources said tonight the Phillies are very much still in the running for free agent right-hander A.J. Burnett.

It is unclear if the parties are close to a deal, but the chances have improved since Friday when Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said, “It’s more likely we’ll go (into Spring Training) with what we’ve got.”

If the Phillies and Burnett agree to a deal – the Pirates seem to be their top competition — he would become the rotation’s No. 3 behind Cliff Lee and Cole Hamels. Kyle Kendrick also has a spot in the rotation. Roberto Hernandez signed a one-year, $4.5 million deal in December. Entering camp Amaro indicated Miguel Gonzalez, Jonathan Pettibone and others would fight for the No. 5 spot.

sign him now we need a # 3 starter to make playoffs

Would be big on two fronts , not only as true no. 3 , but can move M.A.G. to the back of the bullpen. Phils might be able to sniff playoffs if they stay healthy. Still a lot of ifs.

why do the phillies believe in kendrick ? put him in bullpen haven;t we seen enough of him sign burnett

I agree 100%. But Kendick will lose in the bullpen too.

They’ll get outbid for Burnett. They wouldn’t if the Phillies would spend some money. They never spend a cent. Maybe a cent, no more.

I love how people still say the Phillies never spend any money. Cracks me up. If you want to make the argument they don’t spend money wisely, OK. But to say they’re cheap and never spend a cent is nuts.

We really don’t want to see Hernandez in the rotation.

And KK needs to be #5 in the rotation, no higher.

This also might be an indication that the Phils aren’t so high on MAG at the moment.

I’ll believe it when I see it. They put stuff out there all the time to make it appear that they are doing something, like they did when there were rumors they were in on Tanaka.
