So when is Chase going to play?
Do you think Chase is hurt?
I’ve gotten more questions about Utley this spring than any other player, even Ryan Howard. I think it’s because there is always so much mystery surrounding Utley’s health. Hopefully, I answered a few of your questions in this story. Ruben Amaro Jr. said, “I don’t think there’s any chance he won’t be ready Opening Day. We fully expect him to be ready Opening Day.” But then Charlie Manuel said, “His problem is not going away. More than likely, it maybe never goes away. … We want him to be at a real good percentage of playing. Will he ever be 100 percent? I don’t know about that. He might never be that.”
So what to make of this? The Phillies are concerned about Utley’s health. His knee continues to be an issue, and is going to remain an issue the rest of his career. That’s not good news, considering he is coming off the worst season of his career and cannot get into a Grapefruit League game despite not playing in a game since October.
So will Utley be ready by Opening Day? Amaro sounded certain he will be.
But will Utley be the No. 3 hitter the Phillies need in 2012? Right now there’s little reason to be optimistic.
Is that reason to panic? It’s best to wait and see. Utley has surprised before, but the fact the Phillies are looking for infield depth and giving Freddy Galvis looks at second base should tell you something.
