Lannan Down, Who’s Up?
The Phillies placed John Lannan on the 15-day disabled list today because of a strained quadriceps tendon in his left knee. Ruben Amaro Jr. and manager Charlie Manuel said Lannan could miss six to eight weeks.
“It’s a fairly serious injury,” Amaro said. “I know John was upset about it, but there’s not much you can do other than rehab it and come back as soon as possible.”
The Phillies are expected to call up a relief pitcher tomorrow to temporarily take Lannan’s spot on the 25-man roster. A replacement for his spot in the rotation is expected to be announced before Monday’s game against the Pirates, which would have been Lannan’s turn to pitch.
The Phillies have options in Triple-A Lehigh Valley, but their best option there might be left-hander Adam Morgan and he pitched today in Pawtucket. Amaro said right-handers Tyler Cloyd, Jonathan Pettibone and Ethan Martin also will be considered. Amaro said Double-A Reading prospect Jesse Biddle is not an option. He also said the Phillies could look outside the organization to find a replacement, although he said the choice likely will come from Triple-A.

A corresponding roster move will come tomorrow.
Lannan tweaked his knee Friday in Miami, but aggravated it early in last night’s start against Cincinnati. He said last night he has had the issue in the past, but never missed a start because of it. So who replaces him? Well, I might have said left-hander Adam Morgan, but he threw 100 pitches in five innings today. Considering Lannan’s spot in the rotation comes up Monday, there seems to be little chance it’s Morgan. Cesar Jimenez started last night, but that’s because the IronPigs played a doubleheader Sunday and pitched both Ethan Martin (4.82 ERA) and B.J. Rosenberg (6.00 ERA). Jonathan Pettibone (9.64 ERA) has struggled. So has Tyler Cloyd (7.07 ERA).

Phillies, Lannan Agree to Deal
The Phillies not only found their setup man this weekend, they also found their fifth starter.
Sources confirmed the Phillies have agreed to terms with right-hander Mike Adams to be their setup man and left-hander John Lannan to be their fifth starter. CSNPhilly.com first reported the Lannan deal. CBS Sports reported Lannan has agreed to a one-year, $2.5 million contract.
The deals are pending physicals.
Ruben Amaro Jr. said recently they were looking for a low-risk, high-reward starter to replace Vance Worley, who the Phillies shipped to Minnesota in the Ben Revere trade. Lannan seems to fit the bill.
Lannan, 28, is 42-52 with a 4.01 ERA in 134 starts in his career, which he has spent entirely with the Nationals. But Lannan, who has started twice for the Nationals on Opening Day, became expendable in a stacked Washington rotation.
He is a groundball pitcher, which could help him at Citizens Bank Park, although he has a 6.49 ERA in eight career starts in Philadelphia.
But the Phillies wanted a veteran presence to fill out the back of the rotation, which includes Roy Halladay, Cliff Lee, Cole Hamels and Kyle Kendrick.

A few things from last night’s game and this week’s sweep over Washington:
- Raul Ibanez entered the series in a 0-for-34 slump. He extended that slump to 35 at-bats following an at-bat in the second inning Tuesday. But Ibanez finished the series 8-for-11 with three doubles, two home runs and five RBIs, raising his batting average from .152 to .214. Nobody knows where Ibanez goes from here, but it’s a good start.
- Roy Halladay is an insane 18-1 with a 1.56 ERA in 19 starts against the National League East since the beginning of last season. Tim Hudson is the only other pitcher to have 10 or more victories against the NL East since last year. He is 10-5. Halladay’s 18 wins are so insane he is tied for second in the NL East in wins from 2008-11. Josh Johnson has 19 wins against the NL East in that span. (Halladay is tied with Hudson, Jair Jurrjens and Jamie Moyer.) Not that you need reminding, but Halladay made only two starts against the NL East from 2008-09 while he pitched for the Blue Jays.
- Halladay vs. John Lannan was a huge mismatch, and Elias Sports Bureau tells us just how bad it was. Halladay had won his last nine decisions against the Nationals/Expos and Lannan had an 0-9 record against the Phillies. Last night was the first time starting pitchers – one on a winning streak of nine or more games against the opposing team and the other on a losing streak of nine or more games against his opponent – faced each other since Sept. 29, 1929, when the Red Sox and Philadelphia Athletics played at Braves Field in Boston. A’s starter Lefty Grove had won 13-straight decisions against the Red Sox and Boston starter Red Ruffing had lost 12-straight decisions against the Athletics. Ruffing and the Red Sox beat Grove and the A’s, 10-0, snapping both streaks.
