The Nationals broadcasters last night suggested a player or two in the Washington dugout might have been involved in the Phanatic’s four-wheeler stalling before the game. Jayson Werth swears it wasn’t him.
QUESTION: The Nationals broadcasters were talking like you might have been involved in some sabotage?
WERTH: It was already done by the time I got over there. I tried to help him out a little bit. I’m not very mechanical.
QUESTION: So you’re not one of those guys fixing his cars in the winter?
WERTH: What’s that called when you hijack a car?
QUESTION: Hotwire it?
WERTH: I don’t know how to hotwire anything. No, I didn’t have anything to do with it unfortunately. It would have been funny if I did. (laughs) I watched the video and he’s sitting there talking to me, “I can’t get the thing to start.” It was funny. I saw it. It was hilarious. The whole thing was funny.
Phillies just announced Ryan Howard will begin a rehab assignment tomorrow night with Class A Lakewood. He is scheduled to play Saturday with Triple-A Lehigh Valley. If everything goes well I don’t think it’s a stretch he could be activated Sunday against the Nationals. If not then, Monday against the Astros.
Got a couple e-mails wondering why Chase Utley wore his socks up during a Minor League scrimmage Saturday at the Carpenter Complex. First, the Phillies require all Minor Leaguers to wear their socks up. It’s a uniformity thing. Major Leaguers are exempt from this rule in spring training, but Utley followed the program anyway.
“I didn’t want to stand out,” Utley said. “They were nice enough to let me play in their game, so I figured I would respect them and do what they do.”
The subtle gesture did not go unnoticed.
“It just shows his humbleness, if you would,” Phillies assistant general manager Chuck LaMar said. “It shows his respect for the game. He was here at one time. He’s a star because of the way he conducts himself. It doesn’t surprise me.”
Give Julian Tavarez an award for honesty. He had no job offers other than one from the Nationals. He explained his decision to accept a minor-league contract from them to The Washington Post: “Why did I sign with the Nationals? When you go to a club at 4 in the morning, and you’re just waiting, waiting, a 600-pounder looks like J-Lo. And to me this is Jennifer Lopez right here. It’s 4 in the morning. Too much to drink. So, Nationals: Jennifer Lopez to me.”
Hey, everybody! I’m your new teammate, Julian!
